Does anyone use a 31-15 for quilting? I'm making a large quilt, so I'd like to set it up with a darning foot and, if possible, a walking (even feed) foot for straight-line quilting. It's a treadle with a fast 16" flywheel and a big table; I bet it'll be a blast to use for FMQ!

I don't, but it's only because I don't have one. I've thought an industrial would be good for quilting. Plenty of power and a big harp.

Yes, it's roomier for the quilt and yourself (especially if you're 6'3"). I'm on a mission to find both types of feet that will work on this machine. Darning and walking feet weren't made for this model, but maybe a high-shank attachment from another manufacturer will substitute. I'm hoping.

At first I was surprised that it hasn't been easy to find an answer, assuming that lots of people use this model for quilting. (It's a terrific machine and incredibly common; there are millions of them out there.) Then I realized that most 31-15 machines are fitted with an industrial clutch motor and not so easy to control because of the speed. They'd be better refitted with a motor suitable for home sewing, which is not a big deal but it's not the simple slap-on-another-motor process of the domestics. Or, it could be treadled (which mine is) but when the old treadles were converted to electric (and most of them were), the flywheel was in the way, so they simply removed it and tossed it in the trash, making intact treadles somewhat uncommon today.

I got a all metal hi shank darning foot off ebay. It fits mine and does great. I also got a walking foot, but haven't tried it yet. I've read that those can be a problem cause of the way the machine moves. I also saw a guy who ground off part of the U on the walking foot and made it work. I don't know. Just haven't tried that one yet, but the hi shank darning foot fits well.

I hope someone sees this reply... I am trying to modify a Singer walking foot for my Singer 31-15, and have seen the modifications done by Ray Waganka: http://www.treadleon.net/sewingmachi...ngfootmod.html

I couldn't find a walking foot that said "professional" on it as in his photos, and I've seen in other forums that he passed away so I can't email him.
Does anyone know if a regular singer walking foot would work with this dremmel modification?
I want to use it for straight line quilting.
