Default I just had an epiphany .... or a brain phart ....

    not sure which.

I'm messing with our Ideal Automatik and found it has no extra play in the pressure foot shaft when the lever is all the way up. There is a mechanical block that prevents it from going any higher than the lever will lift it.

This machine will stall if you try to run over multiple layers of say denim. I also have others that will do that.

I have other machines such as my Sewmor 505 that seem to walk over anything. The pressure foot shaft has a lot of extra play when the lever is up. So when it hits a thick layer of fabric it just goes over it.

Now I get the connection. Next time I get a machine that stalls I'll check the pressure foot shaft and see if it has any extra room to move. If not, then that machine will be relegated to the light duty league, or sold.

It seems reasonable. we should try the same test on more than one model machine or even style.

Interesting observation Joe. I think that will be one more column heading to add to my Excel sewing machine spreadsheet.
