I have a Minnesota A that was my grandmothers that doesn't work and I would like to get it going again. It survived a large fire at my house about 10 years ago and it is now all gunked up from the smoke and gases from that fire. It has the number 6407 CO stamped on the back LOX608 stamped on the base. It has a Franklin Motor C-4254 patented Oct. 25, 1929, And the back Bobbin plate is stamped "patented Aug 10, 1920". The foot pedal has the word 'White' on it. The machine worked very well before the fire but not so much anymore. I would like to learn more about when this was manufactured and anything about it really. Any suggestions on what to use to clean the Minnesota would be a great help. Isopropyl alcohol kind of works but it also takes the decorative paint off.Thanks so much.

I'm guessing that it was originally a treadle. There were several machines badged Minnesota that were made by different manufacturers. A picture would help. Jon is really good at identifying by the picture.

As you can see I have most of it apart for cleaning and the number. I gave you earlier is wrong and it looks like 10X6085. and right above it at the base of the column are the numbers 6047. Not Sure if you can make it out. just above that is where the motor is mounted. Thanks for your trouble on this. I have learned a great deal today. Also, I forgot to mention that it has a instruction book for a Singer (fire damaged, of course)

This is my Minnesota C.. Minnesotas were sold by Sears re badged from different folks depending on the whim of sears. Called Minnesota because Sers came from there.

Change it to a jpeg file in your photo editor - it might solve the problem. Also, be sure you reduce the size of the photo to less than 2 mb. I just make mine 96 dpi - again with my photo editor.
Don't use alcohol on a black machine - it dissolves the finish. Kerosene works well. I got mine at Walmart, labeled as "lamp oil". Get the unscented.
