Default Point me to the site that give machines' manufactured dates RE: 1892 Sphinx 27

Well I found a bit of a treasure yesterday. No; I did not purchase it, but I did have a lovely conversation with the owners who were trying to sell it at a yard sale.

I looked, and photographed, and wrote down the serial number. I believe it's a 1882 Singer Model 27. I again have iPod Touch photos, sent to my computer, and I don't know if they'll show up or not.

The model number is 10825974 Every time I try to find that look-up site a get directed to the Singer site featuring the new machines.

The machine I "visited" yesterday has the Sphinx decals. On the left front and left side of the bed they are very worn and/or silvered.

It has the plain, smooth face plate. The bobbin winder is long, horizontal, and toward the bottom of the post. It had a shuttle case in place and four long bobbins. There was a very old motor attached to the machine.

Trying to add a photo for the fourth time!

For some reason, once I send the photos to my computer, rotate and resize them, they will not post.

So I go back to my iPod, open QB, reply to my own post and am finally open to show a sideways photo.

I'm sorry, but I cannot rotate it from my iPod.

    Caroline,

The number: "10825974" is the serial number, not the model number.
I went to ISMACS at { http://ismacs.net/singer_sewing_mach...-database.html } and although it does confirm the 1892 date, it does not give the model number.
However, buy the pic you posted it's a model 27.

Here's the old motor with the not-so-old wires and foot pedal.

I'm so sorry these are sideways. I have to go from the iPod to post them, then to the desktop to write. It's a labor of love to get any photos posted.

The plates that cover the shuttle area are rusty in places. The little access door is tucked into a storage pocket on the right of the 1950s carrying case, along with three or four shuttles, a needle, and an odd little spring.

Joe, what would you pay for this model machine in this condition? They want $150. I thought that was way over-the-top.

    $50-$75 around here.

    negotiating points:
    Incorrect motor
    Incorrect foot pedal
    Incorrect case
Missing pieces (side cover plate on head (front facing one)

Totally not an issue for most of us, but good points to talk price down with

Well, since it's a converted treadle or HC machine, what Steve said, and I'm not really into model 27s, I'd probably not go over $35.00.

If it's something someone would want, the price would probably go higher.

Good machine for learning on but I wouldn't pay much. My preference would be put it into a Singer treadle cabinet rather than keep it as an awful heavy "portable".

    Good Luck
