Default Service manual for sewing machines

I was wondering if there is a basic service manual for mechanical sewing machines. I have a 1983 Kenmore machine that needs some minor repairs and I am not really mechanically inclined. I also have some other vintage machines that may or may not need something besides cleaning. So I was wondering if there was a manual that could walk me through some basic stuff so I don't have to take them to someone and pay big bucks if I can do it myself. Any suggestions?

With a Caveat. If you're really not mechanically inclined, have someone who is sit with you the first time or so to show you "good practices" so you're not twisting the heads off screws, etc.
