I love my 401. Got it at an estate sale in the desk cabinet with attachments and manual. Belonged to an interior designer. Cams included. Paid $150.00. I enjoy it and so does the DH. All depends on what you're needs and wants are. I have had fun with the different stitches. All you have to do is set up the cam according to the stitch you want and go from there. My machine was in great shape and still is.

I have had my 401 since 1958 and in hospital only once. It is my go-to machine and I have sewn everything on it from awnings, car seat covers, wedding dresses, bedspreads, etc. It never fails me.

Thanks everyone. I've decided for now to stick with the 403. Now, just need those cams.........

If you are needing cams, feel free to PM me. I have a bunch of extra cams.

The first machine I ever reconditioned was a 403. Like many others, I prefer it over a 401. I find the dials too fiddly. I like the simplicity and stitch quality of the 403.

I don't have cams for it yet (except the basic one in the machine) so I haven't been able to play with the stitches yet, but it seems to me the 401 had a lot more possibilities for fancy stitches. Now there is a 401 at Goodwill (please don't bid against me ) and I'm thinking I'll get it if the price stays under $50. From what I've read, the 403 is simpler to use, but I kind of like the options on the 401 for more variety of stitches. For those who have used both, which did you prefer......and why? Thanks in advance for your answers.
BUY THE MACHINE. If it's under $50 you are getting a deal. My machine guy said most machines have tons of fancy stitches not shown on the dials. He directed me to the letter D and I found a manual online with all of those stitches for my 401A. My 401A was my mothers and had never be serviced until I inherited her. Gilda was used a lot over the years and I sew on her almost daily. Great machine..

I have had my 401A now for fifty seven years and it still is running like a top. I have newer Brother computer machines that I like but the 401 is my first choice to use. Every time I take it for cleaning and servicing they try to buy it but I will never sell it.
