Thank you! Thats a lovely machine! I now believe mine to be a Gebr. Nothmann but it seems that a lot of german machines are very similar! What else doesn't help is that I dont think mine is on it's original base

Good that they are there. It took a minute to think about the needle orientation, but then I realized.that is a transverse shuttle. The path of the shuttle goes from side to side, so the needle would need to be that direction for the shuttle to pick up the thread. There are many (much) later Singer machines that thread front to back rather than side to side. Those would be the front loading bobbins like the 400 series.
