Default what do you think?

My sister has a slight interest in starting to sew (slight). and I found this on craigs list thought of buying it. They are asking 5$ and I am thinking I could clean it up but not to sure if this would be a good staring machine of course I know you are the ones to ask so what do you think?
is this a good machine?

Not really sure of the model but for $5 can you really go wrong??? And if her interest is very slight you certainly don't want to invest too much $$ in the process.

Grab it! If it runs, it is a steal! Even if it doesn't run, it is well worth checking out the possibilities of getting it up and going. It looks like my Singer 401 A, and it is a work horse, one of the best machines made. It might be a 301, but either way, it is a good machine.

Personally, I'd grab it. If her interest wanes, you're only out $5...if her interest peaks, she's got a machine that will probably last for many, many years. Sounds like the perfect choice in this situation.

That is a Singer 401, which some say is the greatest machine Singer made, and $5 is an awesome price.

I'd be tempted to keep it for myself, and find her a different machine.

It is a Singer 401. There is a lot of info on QB about fixing those up. You would do well to search and read everything you can get your hands on. IMHO those were really good machines. I would buy it if it only half there for parts. If it is all there you can get them to work.
