Try changing the presser foot pressure. Or check the bottom of your foot to make sure it's not unevenly worn.

Do featherweight feet screw in from the left or is that just the picture?

Yes, especially the bottom piece in a sandwich. And if that bottom piece tapers to a very sharp point, it's pretty hard to get it to stay in place. I checked my feed dogs and presser foot just now. The foot seems to come down OK as far as I can tell, but the strange thing is: the feed dogs usually are two or three pieces. On this machine they are one piece in the shape of an upside down U. The left side is a little longer than the right side, but most dogs are that way. They are a little wider than most also.

Check the screws on the feed dogs...make sure they're tightened down. Make sure you have the correct feed dogs for the featherweight machine.
