Default FW and 301 - machine quilting on them

Last year I took Nova Montgomery's Featherweight maintenance class at Houston and it was awesome!! I recently ordered the walking foot and the spring action foot in order to take a machine quilting class. The class was amazing. I used the FW for this class just because it is easier to get to class (obviously!!). I really want to machine quilt on my 301. I'm about to order the walking foot and spring loaded/open/darning (?) foot for the 301. They look different and I'm assuming they really are different for the FW and the 301 but I just want to make sure I'm not ordering the same exact feet. They really are different for the 301 and the FW, correct? TIA

Just keep in mind that the 301 is a slant shank and the 221 Featherweight is not, even if they use the same bobbin. I have not tried to FMQ on either one, but sewn many miles of thread through the 301. The 301 is my favorite of about 50 sewing machines that I own.

Yes they're different. A FW is a low shank machine and the 301 is a slant shank machine. The bobbins/bobbin cases interchange but the feet do not. As for the walking foot, just be aware that there was never a walking foot made for a 301. The slant walking foot sold for the 301 has been modified so it fits, but the legs on the foot do not match the feed dogs on the machine(like a walking foot is supposed to fit) so it works okay for some people and doesn't for others.

Ok, thank you. I do my piecing on the FW and have only done a little on the 301. I need to give the 301 a good cleaning and lubricating before I do more on it. I've been impressed with the little bit I've used it for.

Thank you, that's great info. I might go ahead and order the walking foot and keep my fingers crossed. Do you have any info on the 'open' foot? The foot I'd use for free motion quilting?

I quilted my last quilt on my 301. It was just SITD and I used the walking foot I have for my 401a. It worked very well for me, I did not have any problems with the foot. I have not yet tried any FMQ on the 301.

For my 301, I ordered a (slightly) modified slant shank walking foot specified for a 301 from sew-classic.com.. it worked great on my 301; but it also works great on my 401 and 500 (both slant shanks) as well. You may want to consider that purchasing strategy if you also have other Singer slant shanks.

This is the one I was talking about. It works for some people but not for others.
