When you see the upper tension on the face plate instead of the front of the machine on a Singer like this it's a model 15.

Probably it is an 1896 model.

There are some non-Singer vintage machines that have a tension on the face plate. There is also a Singer 115 that looks just like a 15 on top, but has a rotating bobbin. The 115 time period is 1912-1935. There are some Singer industrial machines that have a tension on the face plate besides 15s.

More than likely if you see a domestic Singer with the tension on the face plate it will be a 15 like this one.

Like others have said, it's eitehr a 15 or 115, and there is no way to tell the difference from the top side.

They are very different from the bottom though. The 115 is much harder to find bobbin cases and bobbins for.

115 on left, 15 on right
My name is Cathy - and I'm addicted to old sewing machines and their attachments.
