One of mine actually has "15-1" cast underneath, next to the Singer logo. It means model 15, version 1. Same simple numbering as used in other models (e.g. 66-1, model 66, version 1) not Internet slang at all. Improved Family is what Singer initially called the machine, and this changed to 15-n or 15Kn (n being a number) when they changed it from the fiddle base version. K means Kilbowie, their Scottish factory. The "-" means it was made in their NY factory.

That is what was funny about the comment - neither the person asking or the seller had a clue what they were looking at.
    I didn't have a clue either.

Now I'll need to be looking for that bobbin winder. I think the same one was used on industrial models, so maybe that will make it easier. though I can always wind the bobbin with a different machine. In fact, I just bought a later model that has the bobbin winder on the belt guard. And I'm seriously hoping this one does not look better in person than the pictures.

That is just absolutely lovely! What a beautiful, delicate design. I can't wait to see how it looks when it's cleaned up.

Cute coincidence then. My other one might have a different number.

The bobbin winder is different to those from later models (all later models, from what I've seen) because the early bobbins have a smaller hole (you can't swap the winders). My OSMG fitted a Husqvarna one to my first one but the bobbin wouldn't fit onto it. Didn't get around to machining it, but luckily the second one I bought had the winder. My 12 MOP was also missing its winder (and still is) so it seems to be very common for them to be missing.

I got myself another one - and this one is in bad enough shape that I can fix it up!

This one is a bit newer, serial number #7,015,423 where the older is #5,535,900

1885 and 1883 respectively. Both look in very serviceable shape and the new one even has the optional bobbin winder - wow!

The treadle cabinet for the IF is probably unique to that model. Well, mine didn't come close to fitting anything else I had including later 15s.

I think the decals were painted on back then too, which might explain why they're mostly gone. I was thinking about painting them back on. Anyone tried this? How hard could it be?
