Do you have a manual for your machine? I believe that is a model that had a removable section in the needle plate, You just remove it and turn it around. https://www.sewingpartsonline.com/ne...g-machine.aspx It appears that this machine is probably a left homing machine. If you look at the image you will notice a single hole above the right side of the feed dog openings, whereas the zigzag opening is below the feed dog openings.

On my 158 my needle plate has two openings. One for straight stitch and the other for decorative stitches. You just turn the needle plate around depending on which one you need. Sewing Parts Online has one for $19.95.

For the person who bought the Kenmore 1802 and is looking for a straight stitch throat plate, it is dual duty, it turns around for single stitch . I worked for Sears in the 1970's and worked in the sewing machine department as a sewing machine demonstrator and later in the sewing depart in sales, later on I worked at the Sears Service center repairing these sewing machines, so I know how to use ALL of the attachments, that came with this machine. I have this machine that I purchased way back then. It is a workhorse and I sew everything and anything on it. About 6 years ago I replaced the motor because I didn't want to buy one of the new model of sewing machine with all the plastic parts and gears. I am so glad you love it!

Welcome coolroxs. It is nice you have you on board. I bet you can help a whole lot of folk. There is also a FB group for Vintage White and Kenmore folks if you'd like to play there.
