Default May Have To Use My Treadles This Week

We’re expecting a cold front to get to us here in Southwestern Oklahoma Thursday evening with freezing rain and snow. This is our second winter storm warning of the season. We usually don’t get our first until January. We had snow and a little ice in November.

Ice storms in Oklahoma can mean power outages, so I’ve been getting my treadles ready. Without power, I won’t be on here yaking, so I’ll have to do some treadling to keep myself entertained.

I’ve got five ready to go: Singer 29K70, Singer 31-15, Singer 306W, Singer 66-18, and White VSIII. They’re all on wheels so that we can roll them into the kitchen where the back-up heat is at. We’re supposed to have highs in the 20s Friday & Saturday.

hehehe - this is what we hook up to our generator!

I'm ready for winter - DH brough up a load of wood and I've got several treadles and everything else to go!

My treadles are in the far end from the alternate heat source - but with a few fans we can keep the house pretty decent with the wood stove. I can always move one if needed.

It's about 3 out there right now with about 6" of fresh snow. It's heading your way.

Good luck to you folks out that way. Hopefully the storms won't be too bad.

So- that's about -15 F. Too cold for me! Many years ago in December I went from southern NY at 60 F to the backwoods of Steamboat Springs CO at -30 F for a week of cross country skiing. I don't think it got up to zero, but we got used to it fairly quickly after the initial feeling of frostbitten lungs. It was Very dry, and the powder was beautiful. Near Albany NY I don't lose power very often, and rarely for more than a day. There's nothing like the penetrating warmth of a woodstove on a crickity body. I have treadles, but haven't cleaned them up to use yet. Ditto for the handcrank. Maybe after Christmas.

ThayerRags, good luck with the ice storm, I think the remnants of it is headed our way for Friday. But I have a 201 handcrank, a 66 treadle, and battery lights, so I can still sew! I want my DH to set up my treadle so I can run a light while I treadle. It's on his "honey do" list. Near the bottom of the list, I think...

Our “back-up back-up” plan for emergency heat is the pickup truck out in the driveway. I have 6 handcrank machines serviced and ready to go: Singer 20-1, Singer 221, Singer 28K2, Singer 66-1, Singer 99K31, and Singer 201K4.

I don’t know if I’d want to sew very long with the 66-1 or 201K4 setting on my lap, or even the 28K2 or 99K31. I think my legs might fall asleep, and then wake back up with a vengeance! LOL Maybe I had better find a couple of lap tables that will fit in the truck......
