I have the Singer 301A with a slant shank. Ordered a slant shank walking foot from sew-classic.com....trying it this week. It was $16.95 plus shipping.

So, the feed dogs for a 404 are in a different spot than the 401 and 403? I've never seen a 404 in person, and assumed Singer would have made the frames all the same, and just put the straight stitch needle plate on the 404.

I know this is an issue with a machine like the 301A that did not also come in a zigzag model, so a foot for the 401A won't line up correctly with it, though they are both slant shank machines.

Right, the feed dogs for the 404 are straight stitch http://www.thriftyfarmgirl.com/singe...-machine-parts

Looks like the 404 does use straight stitch specific feed dogs, feet and plates unlike a 401 or 403 that use the wider zig-zag capable feed dogs. At the very least you would have to change these three items (if it's even possible) in order to get correct alignment on the feed dogs to use a zig-zag walking foot.

Theoretically the 404 should be better for piecing because of the narrow feed dogs and foot but the lack of a walking foot may negate that advantage.

I just found this site. The lady seems to have a very extensive knowledge and collection of original Singer 301 accessories.
    http://www.singer301.com/accessories/default.html
The problem is I see nothing about a 301 specific walking foot or even feed foot as it is also called.
The only walking feet I've seen for slant shanks have the wide zig-zag toe.
Nova Montgomery lists one but it looks like a wide toe too.
    Not much help,
    Rodney

I have a genuine Singer walking foot for my Singer 301. It has the word "Singer" along the bottom of the white box which holds the mechanism. The clue is that the word is at the bottom, and normally for other walking feet, it is at the top. Additionally, I have a generic walking foot for my Singer 301. I also have several other walking feet, both generic and vintage, that work on my Singer 401 and another for the 500, so I know they are out there. All of them work. I got most of them on e-bay. There is a Singer penguin walking foot also, but not for slant machines, and very pricey.

great information, thank you all. My theory was, since the machine is always set up, to use it for applying binding when I'm not traveling with it. Since it is indeed the only straight stitch of the 400 series. So I'll do another machine

Thank you all again, I so appreciate the combined knowledge here

I have a vintage Singer walking foot for slant needle machines. Got it under $20 on ebay. Don't think it was ever used. The original packaging was pristine. Works fine.

I bought one at a sewing machine/quilt shop. Nifty Notions is the brand. They make them for all different type machines. I also got one for my Featherweight and vintage Viking. They hold up quite well and are in the $25 range.
