1897 New Royal
I have just acquired a New Royal treadle machine. I will need to order a leather treadle strap. The machine seems to be in reasonable condition. However I have never used this type of machine. I have 3 other antique/ vintage machines, but I don't know how the tension works on this machine. The looks of the machine isn't really pretty(?), but it came with the shuttle / bobbins and needles too. But no instruction booklet or manual. So I have taken the meatless off and have done some cleaning on it. I will be refurbishing the cabinet. I'm not trying to sell or do anything like that, I just want it to be in good working order. Any help or advice will be so appreciated. Also if anyone has a manual, I'd be so appreciative to learn this machine.

Don't forget to scroll over to the far right to find and click on the "Upload" button. I may have a manual for your machine, however a picture would be helpful because New Royal was made by more than one company (Free bought them and continued to use the name). Though the New Royal made by Free is very different from most Free machines.

Leslie, I'm a bit confused. Leon posted a picture of a tension which you said looks exactly like yours, but then you posted a picture of a Free made New Royal that has a slightly different type tension.
The leaf type tension is actually a good way to determine the manufacturer, as each one had something a bit different, so you do have to be very particular when matching them up. However in this case they are very similar as both machines were made by Free. I'm pretty sure you have Free made New Royal, but will need to look at mine when I get home. Though made by Free, it does not take the same needles, shuttles or attachments that other Free made machines take. |
