301 question

A friend was given a black 301 it makes a pretty stitch but also makes a clicking sound with each stitch, she has oiled and clean it up, it was stored for 15 years. We have no ideal what is making the sound ??

Did you disassemble the bobbin area entirely, down to the bare bones, and clean every part of the bobbin, race, hook, and then oil it?

Several of my machines made a click with each stitch until I did this.

Let us know :-)

Has it got a new needle in it? My last featherweight seemed to click even after oiling and cleaning, and I changed the needle ...problem solved. Should have been on my list but was so busy with the oiling, and lube stuff, and wanted to see if it sewed a pretty stitch, that I forgot about it having an old needle in it. We keep "living and learning"...sometime excitement trumps smarts.

I believe it was on the 301 website where I read about that clicking sound (or maybe it was on this site). It has to do with the underside of the needle plate having an area that gets a bit spread out and can be adjusted. I understand that the condition is harmless and occurs simply from use over time.

no we have did taken the bobbin apart compelet but will try that after quilt retreat, she is going to use it then with a FW as a back up. Thanks for all the ideals.

Get a copy of the manual before you take things apart.

This is from my archives. (See the pdf attached)

I'm pretty sure it originally came from http://thefeatherweight221factory.com/, but I can't find it on his page anymore.

I think this is the finest machine Singer made. It's beautiful, I'm partial to the black (I have a perfect black one, lucky me), it sews a gorgeous stitch, it's light, and it's dependable. Even better than the featherweight. Of course, there is the Singer 201 which I always said has the most gorgeous stitch ever seen. And then the.....ok, I just love sewing machines.

Thanks ArchaicArcane for the pdf I bet this is the problem I will check it out. I have a manual for my black 301, we share the manual, this one is my main machine and I have a tan 301 to take to classes or retreats. I have a 15-91 that my hubby and I rewired the motor . Love all 3 of the them, my modern ones are stored.

My pleasure! Please let us know if it clears up the noise! :)
