Thanks Miriam! I've been spelling her name with an H since I started this. :( I don't know how I got Ashlea's name wrong but thanks for fixing it.
There's a bunch of blocks already here or on their way.
Too late to fix it. :( I hope she doesn't mind. I'll tell her any misspellings were my fault after she gets it.
I'm a complete bonehead.

I'm new to this site. I never paid attention to vintage machines, although I own a treadle from way back. It's not at my house for reasons I will not mention here. About a year ago, I bought a Featherweight. I love it. But this last Tuesday, I was given a Singer with bentwood case. I finally had time to open it up today, to look at what was in there. It is a Singer with knee control, with terrible wires, but otherwise looks old, but OK. The number plate says "G0762263". I couldn't find a bobbin, so I called my sewing machine fixer man, and he said he had the long bobbins. Then I figured out how to open the bottom, and found seven bobbins and the BOBBIN CASE. There was a book in there that said "Revised in 1923". I finally got the bobbin threaded.

I would love to make a 9-patch for Ashlea with this machine if I can get it to work. I'm kind of afraid of the wiring, but will try it anyway. The directions in the book say: "To Make the Electrical Connection Unwind the electric cord, screw the plug at the end into an electric light socket and turn on the switch." Apparently the plug has been changed, as it has a plug that will fit into my outlets.

I'll work at this and let you know (if I'm not electrocuted first, LOL).

Wow! Thank you Mavita!

That Singer was a great gift. ISMACS has a list of Singer serial#'s. If I'm reading things right your machine is a Singer model 128 with an allocation date of March 19, 1924. The allocation date is the day that group of serial numbers was authorized for production. Very interesting to me that it originally had a plug to screw into a light socket. Many houses if they had electricity at all may have only had a light in the room with no outlets back then.
Your 128 is a 3/4 size machine. The larger version would be a model 127. As long as the wires aren't bare you should be ok.
Welcome to the vintage section. I think you'll enjoy sewing with your 128, possibly enough that you won't look at new machines the same way again. You may want to take a look at the sticky on cleaning and using these old machines and be sure to watch Muv's videos. She makes it simple.

OOOOOOOOHHHHHH, count me in. Did I get left out? I've been out of pocket for over a week now with visiting relatives and the like in Louisiana, then came home to a self-imposed deadline to finish two quilts, and have neglected my QB reading.

Anyway, I'll try to get mine in the mail to you today. I probably already have a dozen 2-1/2 strips already sewed that I can just gather up and use--uh oh, that won't do--they have to be 3-1/2 inches square, don't they. Oh well, I can do that.

Love this idea, and am really excited about it. My prayers and best wishes go out to Ashlea and Miriam's son as they make this journey in their lives.

Also, so glad to see SteveH back. I was devastated when something like that happened to one of us.

You're not left out and not too late! Please do make one for Ashlea.
Thank you!

There is one on the way from South Dakota. I'm glad this got made "public" so I could participate too. I've got plenty of scraps and machines to sew with LOL!!

Rodney, I’ve been getting my blocks pieced together (I’m making two in hopes that one will be useable), and had a thought come to mind while I was sewing....

You and Roserips have both heard the term “Oh, you can quilt that out!”..... right?

CD in Oklahoma

Thank you Macybaby! Macybaby did I not send you a message too? If I missed you somehow I'm terribly sorry. According to my list I sent yours out at the beginning. I had to have messed that one up too somehow. I wonder how many other mistakes I've made.
I'm so glad Rodney put this out there. I'm making a royal mess of things. I'm starting to think a chimp could do a better job than I have been.

CD yours will be fine. I don't expect everything to be equal. One person's 9 1/2" might be another's 9 1/4". It will all average out in the end.

I think that's why we quilt with cotton instead of metal... It's easier to ease it in. ;)
I have quilted tops that looked like parachutes!

I mentioned to Rodney in a PM that I will try to get something in the mail, but no guarantees. There's a lot of upheaval here at the moment too. I do send our best thoughts and wishes for sure though.

Rodney, stop being hard on yourself! Yeesh! You've instigated a really beautiful thing! The idea of having it be a surprise was great, and now the idea of sharing it far and wide is great, too! You've done a -really- kind thing, period. Sometimes the one doing a marvelous sweet thing feels criticized, which is very unfair. You deserve nothing but accolades. Seriously. You Da Man.

(Plus, you've got an avatar sewing machine named after you - how cool is that?!?!? Untouchable.)

Rodney 09-25-2014 11:23 AM

Don't get me wrong, I am enjoying this and it brings me a lot of happiness to see everyone pull together to do this for Ashlea and Miriam. I've been nothing but impressed at the generosity and kindness of the people here.

We're all our own worst critics. If we're not hard on ourselves we don't get better. But still I've made a few pretty serious blunders on this. If I ever start another one I'll do better or at least it'll be a new set of mistakes. :)
