Not really. You have a lot of control. I love my hand cranks, and they are great for the DGD to sew with too - with a needle guard, of course!

I am converting a 66 treadle that belonged to my ex's grandmother to hand crank.

I spent 21 years in the Navy and that's where I learned to sew. Upholstery and canvas shop on a destroyer tender.
