Crinkle finish and other ugly finish machine thread
6 Attachment(s)
I decided that since we all love and adore the crinkle finish machines I'd start a picture thread about them. So, here is my six machines. Post yours and we'll have a crinkley good time. :D
1: KENMORE Mdl 117-812, made in 1948 for Sears by the White Sewing Machine Co. Brown crinkle finish. 2: "Betty"; KENMORE Mdl 120-491, made in 1954 for Sears by the New Process Gear division of Chrysler Motor Corp.. Gold hammered finish. 3: "Mr. Crinkle"; Singer 66-18, made in 1940 by Singer. Black crinkle finish. Mr. Crinkle lives in a nice shiny bentwood case. Little does he know that it's a Chinese copy of the real thing. I won't tell him though, he might start skipping stitches. 4: "Mrs. Crinkle"; Singer 66-18, made in 1950 by Singer. Black crinkle finish. 5: "Gertrude"; Singer 66-18, made in 1952 by Singer. Black crinkle finish. So, here's the story. Gertrude is Mrs. Crinkles younger sister. When Mr. Crinkle was courting he just couldn't make up his mind. They were so very alike yet, Gertrude had more toys and a library, and he loved them both so much ...... well, he married them both. So since polygamy is frowned upon we won't tell. 6: Louise; WHITE DRESSMASTER Mdl 127M, made in 1955 by the WHITE SEWING MACHINE CO. Dark olive green crinkle finish. Louise got her name because someone, probably her first owner carved their name in the rear edge of her case: F. Louise Stanley. She's one of my favorites. OK, now you've seen all my crinkles and odd finished machines in one place. So, everyone, start posting yours. Joe |
Would that be Chris Crinkle? >;-D
My, you have a lot of those crinkle machines. Someone wanted to sell me a dk green crinkle White in cavinet for only $10. Should I have grabbed it? I really always wanted one of those Kenmores. But I want to repaint it in something wildly Art Deco. |
My godzilla finish machine is hiding in it's case because it's so ugly. They're not my thing at all.

^ A crinkle "locomotive" Kenmore, not mine, but is for sale near where i live. Here's the oil bottle, which I think is really cool. Looks a bit like liquor. I'd have to name that machine Sam Spade or Jake Gittes or some other film noir name, wouldn't I. Complete except for glass ashtray. Dang, that machine is starting to look very attactive, lol. |

This is another Kenmore crinkle that's for sale here. http://youngstown.craigslist.org/atq/3811950893.html
Stealthy cabinet model. |
crinkle Singer 306k
2 Attachment(s)
I owned this Singer 306k crinkle for about 7 or 8 years. I sold it in December 2012. It might have been a school machine, because it came in a blonde laminate table-type cabinet that looked kind of institutional. I had to jettison the cabinet when I moved.

http://detroit.craigslist.org/mcb/atq/3864057104.html for sale in De-troit, it's "Bee" :D
I just never realized how many variants of Kenmores there were. |
MadCow,
Those are some neat Kenmores, especially the last one. But I do like that Singer. Never seen a 306 crinkle. Candace, Ship the poor thing thisa way. I'll adopt it. Joe |
Betty the kenmore is a real beauty!
|
The tan crinkle is the absolute worst color to keep clean. They (tan crinkle 306) come up for sale fairly often. Black is more popular. There is a matching tan Singer light that goes on there, but the insulation was bad so I just took it off and never got around to fixing it.

Can you tell me where you found an imatation bentwood case, I have a singeer 66 red eye, and would like to find a bentwood case for it, and I don't care if it is not an old one. Thanks.
|
The reproduction cases were readily available 8-10 years ago. I just did an Internet search and couldn't find any. that's the problem with imports from China: feast or famine. If China makes it this year, there's a glut of it. When that supply dries up, good luck finding it. True whether it's clothing, fabric, housewares, shoes, or sewing machines. 8-10 years ago, those cases were sold on ebay and at all Singer dealers and AllBrands, etc.

Ok here is one of mine. The rest are hiding their ugly heads on a shelf... This one is a light weight - about 11 lbs. It still has an original tag from when it was bought. The case weighs more than the machine.

I don't know if I can get lucky and post another picture of the machine.

I got that one at my LSMG. If my memory is working he charged me $20.00 or $30.00 for it. Miriam. Nice Domestic. The more machines I get the more I really like the old White made machines. They might be ugly, but they sure sew nice. Oh, if they are still on the shelf, you could take a pic of the ones in your shop and post it. Maybe someone would want to adopt them. Joe |
Thanks everyone, will just keep on keeping an eye open for one.
|
I should take pics of the ones on the shelf. I just can't wild about them. There are a couple other machines up there, too. I figure if they set around long enough maybe they will grow on me... I think about 10 or 12 machines in all. Then there are Singer 15 machines with potted motors that I haven't touched. There has been a lot to do anyway.

Miriam,
I'm curious about those on the shelf, I've seen them, but never paid much attention to them. Steve, Your machine is similar in shape to my Louise. Skip, That is a machine reminicent of the 30s era streamlined locomotive for sure. Cool machine. What needles does it use? Joe |

I am enjoying this thread Joe. Thanks for starting it. |
I have one of those locomotive machines, too. It is hiding somewhere in the depths of the shop. There are a couple Kenmore's, MW and who knows what. Ugly know no bounds.

Maybe you can dig them out when you come up. I think the wires are rotted or something.

White cast iron and Montgomery Ward |
I decided I am going to play also. BUT when I looked at my Excel sewing machine list I discovered I have 14, YIKES, crinkle finish machines. Now I have to go search my photos to find the pics. Be back later.
|
I have a Singer 66-18 crinkle but it's hiding now so it can't be photographed. It's in good shape. I had a Singer 306 but traded it away with $50 for a totally beautiful chocolate 306 from Holland. It has two interchangeable motors.
|
Caroline,
14 of 'em? I want to see them. :D Cricket, The Singer 66-18s might be a tad homely, but they sure sew nice. I got three of them as shown on page one and really don't want to part with them cos they do sew so nice. Joe |
I have a soft spot for the White Rotary (77 I think?) in the army green crinkle finish - I learned to sew on one of those and when I find a good/cheap one on CL someday I will buy a little trip down memory lane!
|
Ok, I uncovered my 1952 White Rotary crinkle finish . Took pics. Have manual and other parts too but never used only tested the machine when I got it from a friendNow can't find that little tree to add the pic to the post . This is the problem I usually have, but at least will keep trying.
|
I don't own a single crinkle/godzilla machine. :)
Sharon |
Madcow, I like the decorations on that White on the Detroit craigslist. I thinik if i were in the area, I'd go for that one as my first crinkle. It could turn out pretty.
I enjoy seeing all of the different shapes and colors of them, and can't wait to see more. Keep them coming! |
Have never seen one here in Aus. Maybe they never made it into the market? Anyway, I think they are really quite lovely....industrial chic?

I only had one crinkle machine. It was a Domestic. It sewed very well and was pretty forgiving and powerful too. All good attributes but I just didn't like the color or finish. This is a picture of mine. I gifted it to a friend and just this week he gifted it to his daughter who loves it. ~G~ |
