Estate Sale find! Singer 15K88 so excited.

Went to an estate sale a couple of weeks ago walked into the sewing room and there she was....across the room...calling me to take her home. Well that sounds so dramatic...but close. The wooden cover is in perfect condition, the machine is almost mint and runs like a charm. Got her for $100 and had to have my son carry it out..must weigh 40 lbs. Can't take this one to retreat, unless I sew in my truck.
I did a search to try and get some information: the serial number indicates the machine was made in 1949; the machine has "Great Britain" under Singer; the model number didn't come up on the Singer site. The machine must have been made and sold in Great Britain? If any one can offer information to help me out let me know.
All the cords are original and not frayed, when I opened the side compartment the original manual was tucked inside. Her stitch is just lovely. The woman that had her really took great care and kept her oiled and humming. Attached a few pictures.
Thank you for looking, I just had to share this new member of the sewing room.

WOW she is a stunning beauty! Congratulations! Don

Charlee 01-26-2012 07:16 AM

She's beautiful Daisy!! Congrats on your new "Lady of the House"!!
The "K" indicates that she was made at the Kilbowie, Scotland plant. What is her serial number?

DawnFurlong 01-26-2012 07:19 AM

Beautiful machine! Congratulations on your find!

valleyquiltermo 01-26-2012 07:27 AM

So beautiful, you got a steal of a deal.

Beautiful machine and case. Especially the case, don't often see one so good. It does look as if the foot pedal has been re-wired at some point, usually the wire is black.

harrishs 01-26-2012 08:35 AM

She is beautiful! Enjoy, enjoy!

Thanks, Carlee; Serial EE963433, looked it up on the Singer site, that is how I came to the 1949 manufacture date. Wondered what the "K" meant, that is good information. Didn't mention that the manual does say printed in Great Britain.

Now that I know she was built in Scotland, will have to come up with a cute Scottish name for the Lass. "giggling"

We wondered about that; the foot pedal is a Singer "Red S Mark" original part. The plug connection is original with the small plug head and no ground foot. I don't know how to determine if this unit was built as a portable or converted from treadle and installed in a case. Any answers out there??

I am thinking that she was a portable electric since she was made in 1949.

quilt addict 01-26-2012 03:25 PM

Very nice machine. How about Arleen, Bridgett or Erin for some Irish names.

irishrose 01-26-2012 04:48 PM

My Border Collie mix, Moira, who is also shiny black in color will share her name. Your machine is a beauty.

tammy cosper 01-26-2012 05:08 PM

I have this machine. And I love it! I have been sewing on it all day today. Enjoy!

She is such a beauty, you did great. Waiting to see what name you give Her, lol...........have fun with Her

Yooper32 01-27-2012 05:50 AM

During our mining days in Grants, NM, we had a Scottish family move in across the street and they had a daughter the same age as my youngest, at that time. Her name was Morag. We thought that was very strange, but over time, it sort of blended in, or in our minds, it did, anyhow. Her dad would often on week-ends come out wearing "the kilt".

psychonurse 01-27-2012 05:54 AM

She is a beauty. Congrats.

redpurselady 01-27-2012 06:39 AM

She sure is purty! Enjoy your new "toy".

You will love her.... I have a 99K and have so much fun with her. I am from Scotland and my daughter found her for me and gave her to me as a Christmas present:)
I call her "Heather Bell" :)

baglady65 01-27-2012 10:50 AM

My Mom had one like this and she gave it to a friend that didn't even sew! Wish I had it now!!!

DeAnne-Mn. 01-27-2012 11:10 AM

fmhall2 01-27-2012 02:48 PM

Yessiree!!!!!! That is a beauty. Lovely. Great find at a good price. Have fun and enjoy.

jmabby 01-27-2012 11:00 PM

What a deal you got, you don't usually find them in that condition. I have one similar, a 15-91 in v.g condition, but not quite as pretty. My case does not have the key, does anyone know where to get one?? Thanks

Annaquilts 01-27-2012 11:40 PM

That would be an awesome machine to put in a treadle cabinet or put a hand cranck on too. Very nice find!

miriam 01-28-2012 02:19 AM

Very nice find. Have you tried FM on it yet?

Daisydoodle 01-28-2012 04:43 AM

HI Tammy, Do you have some of the different feet or attachments for your machine. In looking at the manual it looks like there were several different ones. Also do you use the FMQ on this machine, just curious?

imdelagarza62 01-28-2012 06:41 AM

She is a real beauty! Enjoy.

jbj137 01-28-2012 08:13 AM

My 15-88 Singer is my treadle! Congratulations on your find!

Daisydoodle 01-30-2012 08:19 AM

Think I will name her Heather Locke, my grandmother's maiden name was Locke and her family originated in Scotland. Thank you for all the kind posts!

Alchemilla 01-30-2012 09:32 AM

Beautiful machine in very good condition. She was commissioned on February 21st 1949, link here for dating and finding model numbers - http://www.ismacs.net/singer_sewing_...-database.html. You can look at the ISMACS Site for free. Singer used to have the same info on their site but took it down in 2011 for some reason.
