I recently acquired this Singer 201K on Freecycle. Machine is great but the case had seen better days!! Inspired by a post by Candace on QB I decided to 'have-a-go'!!!! I found the wrapping paper in the 'Bargain Bin' at WHSmith.....perfect!!! Today it is a really wet, miserable day here in the UK :(!! Hubby has gone to a Model Railway Show :).... So here goes!!! Stall set out.......stripped and ready to go!!!!! I'll post pics on progress!!! Watch this space!!!

I am stuck on your getting a really gorgeous 201 for FREE!! Wow!

Have fun with the case, and I hope it turns out perfectly for you.

I advertised on our local Freecycle page for a basic machine to enable me to teach a young child to sew! A young man contacted me and offered his late Mothers machine! As you can see, the case was a bit battered ! When I got it home I gave the machine a wash and brush up and some oil .....stitches perfectly!!! Checked it out on the Singer site and it is a 201k built in 1958! Lucky me!!!

Too cute! and the machine herself is gorgeous. Are you going to name her Buttons??

I'll be watching your progress! I have a nasty case i just stripped down yesterday. ;) Mine needs a little bleach and sun time before the pretty paper happens. :)

Thanks Clare!!! Sheer fluke i found it!! Don't often go into WHS but was in town with Graham and he wanted his latest Railway Magazine!!! What a horrible day it's been here today!!! Even had to put the lights on to cook tea!!!! I expect you have been busy!!!

Mrs. SewNSew 05-24-2014 10:29 AM

What are you using to glue it? I went to the craft store and was overwhelmed but all the different types of Mod Podge. This one is for fabric and that one is for paper..and then you need an acrylic sealer.. sheesh! I haven't even picked a paper and I am already baffled!

I wondered about that! That's what we used as kids in Girl Scouts.

Pardon the thread drift. I love the title of your thread, but I have to admit, that I wasn’t thinking about sewing machines when I first saw it....

Nice work on the case.

Haha!! Thanks!! Sorry if I mislead you!!! I can assure you the days of any other 'stripping' are long gone!! Not a pretty sight!!! I'll stick to sewing machine cases!!!!

Ha Ha!! You're a "cheeky" one CD!! :)

Suzanne57 05-25-2014 03:28 PM

Hm-m-m, maybe I'll do this with my featherweight cases as the outsides are ragged.

purplefiend 05-26-2014 08:59 PM

Hilary,
You've done a wonderful job so far. I like the buttons paper.
I have a 1936 201k, it was a hand crank machine originally. I like to treadle it better.

What a great idea to cover a nasty case. I have the one for my #221 that still is a bit stinky even after everything I have done to get rid of the smell. Maybe getting rid of the fabric will finally get rid of the smell.

Susie unfortunately I think the smell on these cases is the actual old glue! After removing the old fabric I found quite a thick layer of it! As I sanded it down that distinctive FW case smell was there!! :( I sanded down quite a lot but I think the smell permeates into the wood! I can live with it!!!
