Congratulations on your 301A!! I bought mine a couple of months ago on E-bay (over-paid, but really wanted it), it was spotlessly clean and sews like a dream. Mine is the long-bed and I use it for FMQ. Going to name her Hattie.

Don't know why they would put 'marking tape' on it? There are 1/4, 3/8, 1/2 and 5/8 inch marking on the plate and that is what I use. Very accurate.

Before I found a wide seam guide, I used to use several layers of painters tape to build up a "wall" for the fabric to ride against. I can't feed fabric in a straight line consistently without one, especially long strips. I use the markings on the plate for putting the tape down in the right place.
