This old girl is in pretty rough shape.
Would she be worth their asking price?

whinnytoo 05-24-2011 03:51 AM

WOW that poor machine has seen some abuse......... personally I would pass....... you'd be better off paying a bit more for a good machine. IMHO

frauhahn 05-24-2011 03:52 AM

There's a good site on line that explains how to repair, you can buy parts-they go for a lot more in good condition. If you (or someone who loves you) can do repairs-why not??

sueisallaboutquilts 05-24-2011 04:03 AM

Poor girl! She needs to go to the ER !!!
I don't have an answer for you. Maybe ask Billy?? (lostn51)

Painiacs 05-24-2011 05:07 AM

Depends on if u want to fix it up or just thought u have to do a cpl repairs.

featherweight 05-24-2011 05:17 AM

I would also pass. You will find a nicer one. By the time you get this one looking decent you will have invested way to much time for what you can purchase a nice one for. My time is worth sonmething!!!

Tink's Mom 05-24-2011 05:57 AM

she would be a good canidate for a special paint job...

Annaquilts 05-24-2011 06:11 AM

Definitely pass. $50 is way too much for that.

irishrose 05-24-2011 06:25 AM

I'd pass if you care about looks. You could probably get her to sew, but it's an aluminum machine and once the rot starts, I'm not sure it can be repaired.

grammiepamie 05-24-2011 06:29 AM

I came across this one too. But after paying 50 then think about the money you will put out for repairs. This one looked like it had been thru WW 3 to me. I am sure you will find something much better. I am just looking for a treadle.

jrhboxers 05-24-2011 06:55 AM

She looks like the perfect candidate for one of Billy's repaint jobs. You could do her in that beautiful blue/purple that he has shown before or pink or ?????. You might see if you can get them down on price and then send her to Billy for her much deserved makeover.

Quiltbeagle 05-24-2011 07:15 AM

It looks like the metal is disintergrating. I'd pass on this one and save what you'd put into repair (if it's even possible) for the purchase of a machine in better shape.

Katia 05-24-2011 07:20 AM

I would ask for a better deal, but still buy it and have it sent directly to Billy. He could make that poor thing shine like a new penny. And it any pretty color you want.

CarrieAnne 05-24-2011 07:21 AM

poor amchine!

ewecansew 05-24-2011 07:30 AM

No power cord? It should be a give away---not $50.

dreamer2009 05-24-2011 07:41 AM

BIG PASS

Would love to be able to buy and send it to billy for a makeover, but can't do that right now.

Thanks for all the input!

wesing 05-24-2011 03:11 PM

If I lived in the area I would buy it and try to rehabilitate it. It can still be a useful machine.

miriam 05-24-2011 03:22 PM

Billy, did you line this on up on the back fence and take pot shots at it already?

I agree....save your money and wait until you can purchase one in better condition....you will be much happier in the long run! Good luck.

BobbiG 05-25-2011 08:52 AM

Offer 25 and put it away for parts.

sewbizgirl 05-25-2011 10:08 AM

Only if you are a person who can repaint the old machines. This is exactly the kind Billy is looking for, to strip and repaint. He custom paints cars and sewing machines, so he is set up for this. The average quilter/old sewing machine collector is not. I hope someone will point this machine out to Billy.

misseva 05-25-2011 10:44 AM

if it was close to me - i'd buy it.

katcox 05-25-2011 10:59 AM

absolutely No, it looks like a big headache to me. Even is it was free I'd leave them keep it,unless you need some parts then make of offer, 5.00 or whatever it may be worth to you.

Nancy Ingham 05-25-2011 11:13 AM

Someone might notify Cynthia of CGail as her DH buys, restores and sells Featherweights and may be interested in it for parts? Also those of you interested in purchasing Featherweights might PM them to see what they currently have for sale.

KenZ 05-25-2011 11:18 AM

Machine looks like it has been stripped for parts. Thread tention assembly missing. Throat plate missing and the hook assembly and bobbin case may be missing. These parts are costly and you could end up with a costly machine. I do not recommend spending money on this machine.

KenZ 05-25-2011 11:21 AM

The face plate is also missing.

If I was in the market for a FW I would probably buy her. A little TLC and elbow grease would make her look great.

writerwomen 05-25-2011 01:58 PM

You need to consider the cost of complete strip down, overhaul and replacement of any parts not included or not restroable. If you buy and sell it as is you will probably recoop or at least come close to recovering your cost. Depending on if the motor is shot

deplaylady 05-25-2011 02:06 PM

How do they know the motor runs if they don't have the power cord? I see that on eBay sometimes too and wonder the same thing.

the machine has the dreaded aluminum rot. not fixable--not worth $10.

not even a huge amount of TLC will fix aluminum rot.

Grambi 05-25-2011 02:23 PM

If the seller would come down on the price, I think she needs some love! I'm just new to the FW family, so I wouldn't really take stock in my opinion but thought I'd put my two cents in.

Sometimes someone will use a power cord they have to another machine that fits that one as well. In rare occation we have seen people piece meal parts selling them seperately so as to get more particularily when the machine is is poor shape. We deal in vintage machines and all our machines are complete and in top running condition because our standard is high, we don't let someone find out after purchase they have a lemon or parts they need to buy- we do all the work and personally ship the item.

luce321 05-25-2011 04:40 PM

She really needs some tlc. Looks as though her owner had a bad sewing day and beat her up.

MerryQuilter 05-25-2011 04:50 PM

I just passed on a nice one on CL list here for 300, thought long and hard, but so very happy with my 11 year old Bernina, and rarely go to classes that I decided not time for it now. Youngest daughter will be a senior in college and gas and taxes too high. Just have to be patient.

nwm50 05-25-2011 05:19 PM

Hi there Lynn!! Personally as bad as i want another FW....wouldn't give them $10 for that one, no power cord? Then how did they know it would run ?? Have to be a master at fixing to get that poor thing "purty"

bebe 05-25-2011 05:43 PM

expensive to fix!! say bye bye :( :( :(

slk350 05-25-2011 05:58 PM

I would pass also. I'm looking for one, but would rather pay a little more for one in good shape.

Crazy Quiltin Robin 05-25-2011 07:06 PM

I think I would pass on it ............
