Going on a road trip to Los Angeles to pick this beauty up
3 Attachment(s)
Thanks to some great web surfing and a quick forward from JennB and I was the first responder to the ad for this AMAZING machine.
This is a Howe Model B in it's original treadle. It comes with accessories and Manual!!!!!! I decided that although it will cost about $50 more to drive there and back than it would to just ship it, this way I have NO worries about it being damaged. It is my DD's Bday tomorrow (Wednesday) and she decided that this would be a fun road trip for her birthday weekend. (We will hit the LA zoo while down there) So, this means that the Howe Model B that I have now (head only) will be up on the chopping block to any interested parties... |

Steve, what a beautiful cabinet your new Howe Model B has and it even has some of the decals left. Have a wonderful trip with your daughter. I'd go after it rather than having it shipped too. I'm drooling along with the others........

Oh damn... It looks like I will be picking up TWO machines in LA...
Yes, that is a Wheeler Wilson #1 with paperwork and accessories... Now, the real question... how to fit two OLD treadles in a Saturn trunk.... |
Passenger on the roof holding one?
|
LOL, that would not be conducive my my health....
|
Steve, you got some very nice finds there! if there is a will there is a way! lol... rent a lowes truck and return it to a closer lowes by you! lol
|
no way.. the gas for a 400 mile road trip on a lowes truck would kill me...
We are swapping vehicles with Heathers son for the weekend. My Lifted Jeep Cherokee would be worse than the Lowes truck... |
I'm so glad I could be of assistance to help you spend your money :)
|
What a gorgeous machine!! I hope that you and your daughter have a great trip and a safe one.
|
Sitting here drooling also. Road trip, how exciting.

So..... Now the real question is Would YOU drive 13 hours round trip in one day (we came home Saturday night) for the privilege of buying this for $250??
As I unloaded it... After the cleanup and reassemble Yes, those are Silver Plated arms... 4 total bobbins, needle sharpening stone. (Yes, I have a set of needles that came with....) These are the parts I do NOT know what they are.. How about this beauty. Seam ripper. This is the ad in the "paper" (Actually Scientific American May 3rd,1879) This purports to be a drawing of the inside of the Wheeler & Wilson Factory |
Like your machine. glad you had a fun day with your daughter and you brought home a nice machine.

Steve,
I have one of those on my W&W #3 (see the red arrow). I believe I read that it is a thread lube. It attaches to the needle bar and holds oil in it's wick. Cathy
These are the parts I do NOT know what they are..
|
Absolutely that a 13 hour road trip is well worth to purchase that sewing machine. I am envying the fact that she still has her glass feet. Guard those with your life as they are nigh on impossible to find. Unless, hint, hint, you can fabricate replicas.
|
Beautiful, a real museum piece. Enjoy.

Well, the Original reason for the trip was this machine, which we picked up first.
Magic is they both rode home in the trunk of a Saturn... Never seen one with the maker badge in the bonnet/coffin top Elias Howe Model B Cool mechanism, locks up and down. I have ho idea what this foot is for.. the back... |
That Howe is definitely a museum piece.
|
Those are beautiful machines Steve. Thank you for taking such nice detailed pictures and sharing with us. :)
|
Thank you. The W&W is an amazing machine. sewing left to right is different.... Finding out that it was a silver arm was so cool. Even the previous owner of 30 years did not know that it was. she thought the dull dark grey was some kind of steel...
I hope to thread up the Howe and sew with her tonight. It looks like my old Howe B is sold, now I just need so sell a couple more newer machines (and maybe a few curved needles) and I'll be set.. I am trying to find a copy of the Scientific American that the Factory drawing came out of. it is dated May 3rd,1879, and should be issue 42-45 or somewhere around there. |
Worth the trip? You're talking to vintage machine nuts. :)
|
I think I found a source for the article. but because it is a pay-for site, I do not want to link it here.
|
Any chance of posting a short video of them sewing once you get them going?
|
sure. Anybody have a suggestion of where to post them?
|
I want! where is another?
