I have never owned a vintage sewing machine before and don't know anything about them. It was given to me as a decoration for my sewing room. I didn't get anything else with it, just what's in the pictures. Please tell me anything you know!

Hosta 12-29-2010 02:39 PM

very nice I never heard of this brand before

Stitchnripper 12-29-2010 02:41 PM

Wow. I don't know anything about this brand, but I am fascinated by the vintage machines. I would enjoy looking at it too.

irishrose 12-29-2010 02:57 PM

Does it have a serial number? That might tell you more about it. There were only a few companies making machines, but they labeled them for store and other companies.

Go to the virtual vintage machine thread lots of answers to questions.

There is a number in the last picture, but I don't know if it's the serial number since that piece seems to come off the machine. The number on that is 1163055N.

This was the machine that Sears and Roebuck sold back in the early 1900's. And it is a really nice example with the decals almost intact, I think Davis were badging the machines for them at the time.

WOW WOW WOW - look at the height of that throat area...

looks like you could get a king size quilt in there.

What's the height? What's the distance from the needle to the right?

sandyl 12-29-2010 03:17 PM

When you said you got a Minnesota machine I thought you were going to say you got a Viking! I have never heard of the Minnesota.

I never have either, but I don't know anything about vintage machines in the first place!

CoyoteQuilts 12-29-2010 03:50 PM

It looks like a treadle machine to me. Sweet looking. Bullet type bobbin. Can't tell if the bobbin case is there or not. Great decals. Go to the virtual area and Billy has put up a tute on cleaning up these babies. I printed them out and am just waiting for a couple good days so I can do my 'oldies' but goodies.

KatFish 12-29-2010 04:32 PM

Beautiful machine. I would be tempted to add a hand crank to her.

vintagemotif 12-29-2010 04:37 PM

Beautiful machine!

The harp height is 6" and the distance from the right of the needle to the right side of the machine is 7 1/2" at the bed line and 8 1/2" in the middle (the right side of the machine curves in toward the bed).

Gosh, I didn't even think of a name for her yet. My hubby is oiling her now and trying to figure out how she works. :)

That's fantastic, she is a real beauty, Looks like she is in really good condition.

so-sew 12-30-2010 05:43 AM

That old scroll work is so beautiful. I would love to have an oldy like that, but I too would be questioning what to do.

CarrieAnne 12-30-2010 05:54 AM

Its very pretty!

goodluna 12-30-2010 06:20 AM

That is a beautiful. I have my grandma's that is a white brand but very much like that one. Be very careful .trying to clean it because I have one once that my husband got somewhere, and I tried cleaning it, It had been stored in a very dirty place. The decals came off in pieces. I think I used comet or such. Better to leave it alone.

Jingle 12-30-2010 06:24 AM

Good for you 7, I have not heard of them. Billy posted what he knows about it, he knows his sewing machines. Go check out Billy's thread on cleaning it up. Be careful and don't ruin the decals. Good luck.

Loved the blog, that's exactly what the machine looks like. I signed up with the International Sewing Machine Collectors' Society last night so I can learn more about it.

I did see a couple of them on eBay. DH is interested in the monetary value, I'm more interested in getting it running!

Exactly, I'm really worried about damaging the decals, so I'm going to follow his recommendations. The machine does seem dirty, discovered that as hubby was oiling it last night. It's rubbing somewhere, but we can't figure out where. I know nothing about these types of machines, but DH says he used to see them all the time growing up. He's also very mechanically inclined, so he can figure out how it works for the most part.

katlady 12-30-2010 07:12 AM

What a beautiful machine especially since I'm from Minnesota and love old sewing machines. A neat gift.

mcbride4362 12-30-2010 07:24 AM

It was so nice to see someone that lives close by! I am in Traverse City. Do you belong to a quilters club in your area?

gmcsewer 12-30-2010 08:14 AM

I, too, thought your "Minnesota Machine" was some joke on a needle and some thread or such. This is a wonderful machine, and who had it and where that it is in such great condition?

OmaForFour 12-30-2010 08:35 AM

appearing in the 1894 catalog
The "Minnesota" was a vibrating shuttle model manufactured by the Goodrich Sewing Machine Company of Chicago, Illinois. Made at the company's Kankakee, IL, plant, this 1890s machine used a New Home type shuttle, a Domestic styled bobbin winder, and bears a striking resemblance to a National

I found this description on a Google search. The picture looks like your machine but I am unable to get the picture over here for some reason.

grammyj 12-30-2010 08:36 AM

I don't know anything about it but it sure is beautiful.

luvTooQuilt 12-30-2010 08:36 AM

Whoo Hoo, Lucky you!!!

Confederate Rose 12-30-2010 08:45 AM

You can send pictures of the machine to Sears and ask if they can give you any information on this. I sent a request to the Service Dept. in Chicago, with pictures of a stereoscope. They sent me pictures of the catalogue in was in with all the information. That was about 10 years ago, so i don't know if they will still do that or not. It's worth a try.

Oh very cool, I will do that, thank you!

Thank you so much, I am loving all this information! I've seen so many vintage machines here on the QB and didn't pay much attention to them. Now that I have one, I'm a sponge for info on it!

I'm going to have to ask more about where they got it. They have no idea what they started by getting this machine!

ydenette 12-30-2010 12:09 PM

Contact Dave the machine man. In several quilting books. Sorry I do not have his info here. He does work on speiality machinges. Try ebay. You will see him there.
