Grandma's Sewing machine for sale on Craig's List

***Please note - none of these are my machines, I don't have to make this stuff up... some of these ads will expire quickly/will get deleted from CL. If in doubt start at the bottom of the postings for the most current good stuff***

Some of the best deals on Craig's List are grandma's old sewing machine.
Some of the worst deals on Craig's List are grandma's old sewing machine.

Add a few on here if you wish... I couldn't find them all... Some times I wonder if it isn't just their marketing ploy. I have bought some good stuff that way though. Sometimes they think they know what they have, some just want to get rid of it, some are probably out and out liars. You decide.

Some of it will be WAY OLD/EXPIRED, but we also have a fun thing going for stuff that is way out there and here is a link to that one: http://www.quiltingboard.com/vintage...ml#post5969150

Anyway these are listed as having to do with Grandma's sewing machine... go on make your snarky remarks... add new grandma's sewing machines for sale to the list or just enjoy reading

I love the stories...
"Had a garage sale, and my grandma decided to part ways with this sewing machine desk. It is a White brand sewing machine model no. 764 serial no. 76167. This machine was introduced at the world fair in 1964 and it still runs and sews to this day. The knee pedal, and all the plugs still work. Wood is in good condition with all drawers and even the tray for the bobbins. Great condition. These go on eBay for $500 but my fiancé and I are moving so it has to go. Please call or text with any questions."

"There is a story to this piece. This has been in our family for over 100 years. When Grandpa's Mother passed away he was four, this was the only item he received to remember her by. To this day, my Grandmother still uses the sewing machine. The machine is a HOME RUN (that's the name of it.) Everything in there home looks new and this item is of no exception. Grandma is now 96 and wants to sell it. They had it appraised over 25 years ago for $10,000.00. The cabinet has never been refurbished and the coloring of the machine is still very vibrant. All original attachments included - even the oil can! I don't see a scratch on it! They don't make cabinets like this anymore! Many compartments for storage. All offers considered. The machine inside is called a Home Run. It goes with the cabinet. COD only please."

If the ads are still up - the BS probably didn't do any good yet.

Miriam. When do you ever sleep???? I think I had better start re-homing some sewing machines to save my grand kids a lot of trouble.

miriam 04-01-2013 06:12 AM

I didn't have to look very hard to find ads from Grandma...

Glenda m 04-01-2013 06:52 AM

I have my grandmother's machine and now I am a greatgrandmother. Think I can 'cash' in on it? NO, my kids would "kill" me. LOL

I'm thinking that grandma's machine is not the best advertising route to take. Unfortunately, memories really aren't worth much to other people..... only to you. Some of these are nice machines......$10,000????? Really?????

SteveH 04-02-2013 09:12 AM

here is the SFBay's never ending Grandma listing.... "It was Great Grandma's", that must be why it is so expensive.

I love looking at the stuff trying to figure out what Granny was doing with that in there... My favorite 'found' tool is a crochet needle with the end ground off and then sharpened. I use it so much!!!

Miriam, Green with envy over what Grandma left in her drawers. I have never found any with amount of stuff.

Most old sewing machines probably belonged to somebody's grandma....

That first picture is only one drawer from that cabinet. The other picture was just two drawers. I rarely do find stuff in the drawers. I love it when I do and I had to brag...

Does your collection count as belonging to someone's grandma????

miriam 04-02-2013 12:50 PM

I AM THE GRANDMA TO 7 YOUNG CHILDREN... does that count???

Of course it does. Was just clarifying. Now will Wilbur leave anything in the drawers??

miriam 04-02-2013 04:35 PM

HHHHMMMM Wilbur hasn't discovered the drawers yet. I keep a close eye on him in my shop. He does not get the run of the place. Oiling the rocking horse was at his home. He doesn't know about attachments yet. He is way intrigued by sewing machines themselves. Just give him a sewing machine and a screwdriver and he is a happy little Bob the Builder. Junk machines do come in handy. I should fix him up with a bottle of oil to go with that junk SM and screwdriver. I hope a good chunk of his inheritance will be to know how to actually use and maintain a SM & maybe much much more!

I about swallowed my gum on this one. I recently seen this cabinet w/o machine for $500 in an antique shop. Apparently no $9500 worth the memories to drain some ones pocketbook

DonnaC 04-03-2013 05:33 AM

OMG... I may never stop laughing about the "Home Run".... all they had to do is look at their own photo to see the actual name.... too funny.

damaquilts 04-03-2013 07:56 AM

I looked at a few and the one in Atlanta that is the Household cracked me up.. I had one and just sold it in VA beach for $75 .. It did look much better though and had all the attachments.. I hated getting rid of it because it would sew just about anything short of a car bumper..lol But that thing weighed 55 lbs and I am getting way to old to be lifting and moving it yet again. It went to a good home to a fireman who sewed equipement bags with it. :)

Quilterfay 04-03-2013 11:00 AM

IT breaks my heart to see these people selling their "grandma's sewing machines". I never got my grandmothers sewing machine. It was given to the oldest granddaughter who sold it. But I do have my aunts sewing machine and i will always treasure it. I am the only granddaughter that sews a lot.

10000 come on it isn't made of Gold. But I wouldn't mind having that beautiful cabinet.

It also makes me sad to see people selling them and saying it was grandmas or great grandmas, or even worse been in the family forever... When I got my first 66 I was so excited I was showing my dad and telling him how I have always loved them and hope to get a featherweight one day too. He called me later and tells me he was telling his mom about my "new" machine and she goes "oh yeah I still have my featherweight that I bought brand new in the table in the early 40's, when I'm done using it I'll give it to her!" Now I never in my dreams would I have thought that not only will I have a featherweight but it will be MY GRANDMAS!!! I will never sell it and my kids better not either! I will come back and haunt them!

SteveH 04-03-2013 01:00 PM

same here... My uncle "helped" my Grandparents clear out their old house and "that dusty old singer" went to the dump.. My interest in these old machines began with the process of tracking down the same model/year/deals/cabinet as hers was. I have them now. but they will need LOTS of work.

I have bought three machines that the seller claimed were long time family possessions, and i asked each one of them "are you sure you want to part with this? maybe your kids will want it some day" they usually say something like "nahhh, it's not worth enough for them to want it"

Sad

quiltgal 04-03-2013 02:50 PM

Interesting! Took a look at a bunch of the adds. So many, are 'some one else's manchine ...., but they are selling it like it was their machine... Makes me wonder! Especially, the ones where it is the fiancee's grandmother's machine. So, why is the fiancee not selling it?!

w7sue 04-03-2013 09:39 PM

There is a FW on craigslist in Albany, OR for $675 -- the owner feels justified because she knows the "history" ... lol

I have my grandmother's Singer 15-90. My sister had it originally but was to quote her "getting rid of crap". It still works and I want to use it, I am just lacking enough hours in the day. Mom thinks that her mother, my grandmother, also had a treadle at one point. I have no idea what happened to that.

I wonder how many of these "dusty old machines" did end up in the dump because no one appreciated their value and beauty.

SteveH 04-05-2013 11:31 AM

ok, so this is not a sewing machine, but the concept we were discussing is the same
http://sfbay.craigslist.org/nby/atq/3697047730.html

"I inherited it from my Mother who inherited from her Mother who brought it to California from Missouri by covered wagon is the story I was told, so it has been in the family for a long time. I am asking for $100 (OBO)."

How could a person sell this...? I would have to be in a pretty darn rough situation to make me sell that if it was part of my family's heritage!

miriam 04-05-2013 11:36 AM

Of course it was grandma's or somebody's so make up a story eh? Drives me crazy.
