I just recently acquired a 1903 Singer 127 that was free from an Estate Sale. Sent it to my repair man for servicing and just got it back yesterday. What a beauty. Also I recently bought a Singer 201 Centennial on Craig's List for $10. A short time later I went to another estate sale looking for the blonde Singer sewing cabinet that was listed and, what a surprise, it had a 15-91 Singer inside, both items for $65. This got me to thinking, I wonder how many machines do my quilting friends have. I have a total of 11, One Universal, my first sewing machine that is nearly 40 years old, a Brother CS6000i, 2 Singer 201's, a Janome Mini Sew, A 1903 Singer 127, 2 Singer Featherweights. a Singer 15-91, a Singer 301A and a Singer 66 Treadle that was given to me by my MIL. My repairman says I have a nice collection.

LOL! There ya go - that's the right answer! ;)

If you had a hundred thimbles, no one would ask how many of them you "needed."

oldhag 08-06-2011 06:17 AM

I stopped counting after 30. I don't want to know how many I have. Right now I am using 8 of them on a regular basis.

Lacelady 08-06-2011 06:19 AM

As many as you can afford and have room for! That should give you enough scope, LOL.

Then when you have found a treadle you don't have room for, could I have it please?

shnnn 08-06-2011 06:24 AM

As many as you can love!

I have 5 right now - not long ago hubby made a comment about his mom having "like 5 sewing machines!!!!" so far he hasn't commented too much on my growing collection, and I suppose the difference is she buys $1000+ machines, I'm around $300 total. He even stopped when we drove past a yard sale last week and saw an old singer in the front yard :)

bookworm 08-06-2011 06:25 AM

As many as you can manage :)

Mariposa 08-06-2011 06:29 AM

I only have 3. My Pfaff 7510 is only 15 yrs. old. Have a 1947 Featherweight, and a 301A two-tone. Now to find attachments for the 301A! :)

Mariposa, have you searched April's 1930's Shop? She has lots of goodies and is so nice to work with.

PaperPrincess 08-06-2011 07:49 AM

How many sewing machines do I need?????
One more than you already have!!!!!

greenini 08-06-2011 07:51 AM

I'm at 6, but 2 are 15-91's (I had to buy the 2nd one to get a decent price on the 301 I really wanted). I've been good, I bought a 66 I resold within 3 days to someone who fell in love with it, I sold my BL that I didn't use and 1 of the 15-91's is outta here....but I may need a 201, we'll see

If you've got the room (I don't really) and the $...the sky's the limit, isn't it?

sueisallaboutquilts 08-06-2011 08:09 AM

I think the sky's the limit when it comes to vintage Singers.
I am crazy about them! I have around 7 now I think :)
I have a Bernina 150 QE that I love but she's been lonely lately. I'm about to learn FMQ on her- hopefully :D

One way to find attachments cheap is to look for attachment sets that were made for the Touch & Sew machines - they often go for a song on eBay, where sets made for the 401, 500 and 301 can get really pricey.

Of course, you won't be able to use the design disks for Touch & Sew machines, (unless you later get a slant-o-matic ;) ) or some of the feet intended for zig-zag, like the overedger.

But you can get a ruffler, cording/zipper, straight-stitch, bias tape applicator, narrow hemmer and sometimes one or more of the optional feet - like the edgestitcher, quilter, even feed, darning foot, tucker, etc. :)

amma 08-06-2011 10:45 AM

I would build on a room for them if I could afford too and fill it LOL I guess we all have our own ideas when enough is enough... :D:D:D

dreamboat 08-06-2011 10:50 AM

After my latest arrival, I now have 12.

auntmag 08-06-2011 11:43 AM

You only NEED one, but you can have as many as you want or can afford.

Hen3rietta 08-06-2011 11:45 AM

Well I only need one, but that didn't stop me from acquiring, 13 I think it is now, because they are just pretty things to looks at and use.

Amen!

leggz48 08-06-2011 11:57 AM

I have my original Universal (1970ish), a Peerless (receipt dated 1959), my Grandmother's International (not dated), a Featherweight 221 (1950), my Janome Memorycraft 6600 (2008), my HandiQuilter Avante 18 (2010), a Singer 2263 (2011 for carrying to classes), a Janome 2030DC that I won at a Grand Opening yesterday, and a toy Singer (for display only).......that's 9...and counting as I continue to looking on ebay for bargains.

annthreecats 08-06-2011 12:06 PM

I have three machines, the oldest is 29 years old. I really don't have room for any more, but if a beautiful vintage Singer came my way with the right price tag, I could give it a good home.

I agree with Hen3rietta, that they are beautiful things to look at and use.

pocoellie 08-06-2011 12:09 PM

Great deals!!!

jrharry 08-06-2011 12:40 PM

I have purchased since April a Singer, 15-91, friend gave me a featherweight, Singer Red Eye 66, Singer 301, 1953 Kenmore, Jamone memory craft 8000, Singer 201-2 (last week) and a 1903 treadle this week that my daughter got me for my birthday (found in Seattle). Looking for a cabinet for this baby. These are in addition to my 1974 Viking, and two Brothers, one computerized. Also have my Cinderella. I am hooked on all these vintage singers since joining this board. Never enough machines. Thats 12 machines and still looking!

janallyn 08-06-2011 12:44 PM

all you can get, i am still looking for a crank singer, i do not need it, but how beautiful yours are, there is always room on the bookcases for another beauty

Stitchnripper 08-06-2011 01:16 PM

I have a 15 in a treadle, a 66 electric in a cabinet, a featherweight, a 327 I bought new in 1965, an older elnita I got for $10 at a garage sale and my go to machine which is a Brother XR-52. I'm looking for a hand crank. Oh, and maybe a portable vintage electric - one in a case.

deedum 08-06-2011 01:51 PM

Gee, I thought I had plenty, need to rethink this!
I only have 7 real machines and 1 toy singer!

I have two Singer 15's that I adore!
I have one 99k that I havent' hardly looked at!
I have two 301's that I really like
a Janome 9500
a Janome Jem
and of course my "sweet pea" toy singer
still considering a featherweight, and a treadle, then I am done! Seriously!!!!

LyndaOH 08-06-2011 01:56 PM

Apparently I need eight, because that's exactly how many I have. I'm going to sell a few soon, though... I swear. No, really, I am.

KatFish 08-06-2011 02:12 PM

Need? Well... as many as it takes to get the job done. At least that's what I tell DH. I have 16 machines and DH has 26 fishing poles, so he's fine with as many machines as I feel I need. :D

Charlee 08-06-2011 02:19 PM

I have 19 now. I'm drawing a line tho, NO MORE CABINET machines!!! We live in a two bedroom apartment, I have one treadle in the living room, two treadles/two electrics in the dining room, and one treadle/two electrics in my sewing room, not counting the portables, or the midarm in my bedroom!
So....no more treadle machines, UNLESS it's a parlor cabinet...I'm still jonesin' for one of those...or another pretty unique cabinet machine of some sort...

QuiltingJaguar 08-06-2011 02:23 PM

You don't need two feather weights when we don't have one. Sell it to me then you will feel better and me too.
What a collection, wow

Barb44 08-06-2011 04:15 PM

I am just a baby collector. I have a 1886 Victor treadle that I am restoring, a Singer 15-36 electric, a Singer 457 which needs a gear replaced and a good cleaning, and my 15 year old Singer 2638. I paid a total of $40 for the 3 older ones. I just want one more - a Singer 27 treadle. I don't have room for any more.

As stated before, as many as you can love!

roselady 08-06-2011 08:01 PM

WOW.....I have some catching up to do!! Until a year ago I only had one, and it is 25 years old!! A year ago I was blessed with a featherweight from my SIL, she didn't know what she had, just thought it was a stinky old thing!! Unless mine dies, I'm afraid my husband would have a hard time understanding why I would need another one.

Margie 08-06-2011 08:22 PM

As many as you can enjoy and afford :)
