I have a 306W and will weigh it tomorrow morning and will let you know the weight.

If it were me I'd place/pack in a rolling carry on suitcase, something that would fit under your seat. Ship the base home.

I would not use styrofoam peanuts for packing. They shift and won't keep the machine from sliding around in the box. It would be better to use packing paper or solid foam to pack top and bottom and around all sides. Be sure nothing shifts when shaken.

I have a 306W that was my Mom's. The storage case is long gone, but the machine is on the wooden base. I'd like to bring it home with me on the plane the next time I visit. My question is, how can I pack it so it won't be damaged. Can the wooden box be easily removed and wrapped separately from the machine to prevent damage? Can I wrap it in bubble wrap, put it in a box and then put it in a heavy duty outer box? The airline says it's ok to carry it on the plane, but I'm worried about the weight of it because it is heavy. Does anyone know how much it weighs? What does the storage case look like, maybe I can find one? Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry I didn't get to weigh the machine this morning, but did just do that and it weighs 28/29 pounds according to my scale.

I'd buy one of those rolling sewing machine carriers that I used to see at the old Hancock's Fabrics stores. Surely JoAnn's has them too. Then carry it on the plane and ask the flight attendant to put it in their closet for the flight. I think that would be the safest way to get it home.
Something along the order of these... buy the smallest one that it can fit in. https://www.amazon.com/s/?ie=UTF8&ke...l_3h29o0myjf_e |
You might check out Fed Ex or UPS and see how much they would charge to pack the machine.

Janey - Neat people never make the exciting discoveries I do. |
Pocoellie, 28/29 lbs? Great, thank you!

One thing I don't think has been addressed is that a vintage full size sewing machine in any kind of case/carrier is not going to fit under the seat nor do I think it will fit over head.
