This is for sale at an estate sale in town. This is the only photo.
Do you know what machine it is? bkay |
To me it looks like a 3/4 size model. The bobbin winder is on the top near the hand wheel (not under the stitch length knob), so I guess a 128. The decals looks like they are in good shape, it might clean up very nicely.

original Singer hand cranks (not the machine, just the crank) can sell for $75 or more.
It looks like it's got the very old style box for the attachments, and even though it may be missing the front slide, they are not difficult to obtain. If it's under $50, I'd snap it up in a heartbeat. If it's also got the lid, then I'd go higher. Not that I'd need another machine like that, but I'll grab a handcrank when I can. |
...but the hand crank is already occupied for this Singer and it's nice one?
|
Who knows what this machine really looks like - I've seen plenty that took pretty good from the back side, and horrid from the front side. Often uninformed will show the back side specifically because it is the nicest side.
I was offering advice as to what it might be worth - and a Singer with an original hand crank is worth quite a bit more than one without. |
Did you get it? Huh, didja, didja?
|
It's out in the suburbs, but I'm going today. I hope it's still there.
They have a good JoAnn's out there. She is having a 20% off sale for senior citizens, plus has the premium cottons on sale for 40% off. Plus, I'm meeting my sister, who gets 15% off for being a teacher. They'll almost have to pay me for those 2 quilt backs I need. :) bkay |
I got it. I checked the serial number and it says it's a 28k. The serial number is Y620591. I think it has a shuttle in it. It's frozen up and pretty rusty and dusty. It's missing the top. The decals are in pretty good shape. There is just one spot that front of the arm that's been de-decalled. I'll get some photos and post them.

Yay!!! Waiting for those beauty photos...

bkay, I just read this Thanks for the post. How fun.
|
That serial number should read Y6205911. I missed seeing the last one. Went back to check, but forgot to change the number on the post.

28K, one of 15000 authorized to build at the Kilbowie Clydebank Scotland plant on November 29, 1928. Great find!

It's doesn't appear to have been used much. The decals are still pretty good with the exception of the pin rash. It's probably been in someone's garage for a long time.
It was kind of an estate sale. The couple was selling everything and going on the road in an RV. There are a bunch of old machines on CL. bkay |
looks like great potential... and 5 bobbins? wow. That shuttle is going to need some serious attention.
Anyone know the name of these decals? |
There are 10 bobbins.
I'll look on ismacs and see if I can find the decals. bkay |

The machine below was gifted to me by Bkay. My brother lives in Dallas and pick it from her at the begining of the year. I finally got to Dallas this Sep and picked it up from him. Had a great visit with my mom and other siblings and even went to the Texas State fair. Here you will find the after pics of the cleanup. She sews great and is a wonderful machine and will be used often.

I'm so happy to see it like that. I never dreamed it would come out that great! I'm glad you now have it.

That machine sure cleaned up nicely.
Did I notice a hand wheel change? Also could you tell me how large the part that goes in between the spokes is? I do not have an original Singer hand crank and I was wondering if there is a difference in that part and how they fit the different spoked hand wheels. Janey - Neat people never make the exciting discoveries I do. |
No this is the original hand wheel to this machine and is a nine spoke wheel. Most hand cranks use a 9 spoke and is about 1 and 1/8" between spokes. My ruler is not very good. The extra hand wheel you see on the table is one that goes with another hand crank. I am lucky to have about six original singer hc machines.
|
So glad you snatched it up. Restoring it will be fun.
|
Glenn, I was actually wondering how wide the part of the hand crank that goes in between the spokes is. The part is about 3/4" on my reproduction hand crank and has a rubber band like piece around it, It is approximately 5/8" above the stop motion knob.

The width of the finger is 5/8" to 3/4" on the original singer HC depending on what it is wrapped in leather or the rubber thing. It is about the same size as the reproduction HC. I have some with leather and some with the rubber band thing.

Thank you.
