Im bursting with EXCITEMENT!!!!! New Home Treadle for $10

3 Attachment(s)
I went into a local store I hadn't been into yet and was looking around for anything. I asked the lady if she had any vintage sewing machines preferably Singer. She said she had a treadle in the back wasn't sure what brand and the lady was only asking $10:shock::thumbup:. I asked her if I could see it so she went into the warehouse and found it, she came back and told me it was a New Home and that her husband bringing it up. Once I saw it I was sold. She needs a lot wood restoration and a good cleaning!!! There is a little rust on the peddle that I am hoping I can get off. The needle moves up and down and the bobbin is still there. The rope that attaches to the treadle and the machine broke (its dry rotted) while my friend and I were trying to hook it up. Do you know where i can get another one to replace it???

Best of all, I found the original instructions, warranty and needle pack:shock::D!!!! The direction manual is very brittle so I have to be careful with it. There is a piece of paper in the directions with a stamp dated July 10, 1932, I wonder if this is her birthday?!:)

So now that I have her home, she needs a bath. What is the best oil to clean the machine?????

What a nice find! I'm sure someone here can help you find the pieces you need.

Candace 01-30-2012 11:59 AM

SCORE!!! Just use your sewing machine oil as the cleaner and go very lightly over the decals.

She looks to be in pretty good shape. Her bobbin and case is there so that's a big plus. She's missing a cover for the bobbin area but you can maybe find one. Look for a local Singer repair shop that has old machines. If you don't have one in your area, there are sources on the net. It is a little harder to order something than to see it in person but it can be done. The belt comes in a little package that you cut to fit yourself with a staple thing to join the ends. (at least mine did for my old Singer treadle) You can also buy the bobbins off the net. It's nice that you have the original needles. Compare one to regular Singer needles until you get a match BEFORE you break the last one. Have fun getting her up and running!

I have the bobbin cover I forgot to put it back on when i took the picture.

Lucky you! I enjoy my treadle-it sews beautifully. Yours looks nice, it will clean up and really shine.

Charlee 01-30-2012 12:39 PM

Beautiful Kay! :) You're going to enjoy her a lot...get in touch with Glenn on the best ways to refinish the wood (unless, of course, you already know! LOL )
Can't wait to see the after pics, the before pics are GREAT! What a steal! :)

Sandra in Minnesota 01-30-2012 01:09 PM

Lucky deal! She looks great. :)

deplaylady 01-30-2012 03:08 PM

Super find! Really pretty and my New Home is so easy to treadle - I'm not sure why but it's much smoother than my White or Singers.

annthreecats 01-30-2012 03:35 PM

Wow, she looks like a great machine and the price can't be beat. Have fun making her pretty.

pinkberrykay 01-30-2012 03:35 PM

She's my first. I pick up a Singer Dressmaker (?) on Wednesday and I am looking at getting a featherweight 221 or 301a shortly...then Im done for awhile:D

She is a beauty and I am positive she will sew like a dream. I love my treadle. It was my grandmothers', and I am 73. It will soon be 100 years young and going strong. It was my grandmother's wedding gift from grandad.

Emma S 01-30-2012 06:14 PM

I'm so glad this came your way. Good luck with the restoration.

~giggle~ Has anyone mentioned that the wonderful world of vintage/antique machines has a VERY slippery slope? :D

carolaug 01-30-2012 06:42 PM

Score!!! I paid 95.00 for my treadle last week...worked on her with a friend and we got her all clean inside and out...and tonight we got her working....love it...use chrome cleaner on the metal...not the body...then singer oil which is 3.00 at Joanns, and 409 on the rust...do not use water on your screws. I did use a little dish cleaner missed with water for the body but only lightly damped a cloth. Good luck...your will love it...take lots of pictures before you tear her a part so you know how to put her back together.

Lori S 01-30-2012 07:13 PM

I would be excited ! Such a wonderful machine... and such a DEAL!!

Teacup 01-30-2012 07:33 PM

She is beautiful! Her decals look great. Did you name her yet?

DawnFurlong 01-30-2012 08:04 PM

Congratulations on your wonderful find! Can't wait to hear how you like sewing on her. I hope to own one someday. Seems like a relaxed and enjoyable way to sew.

jaciqltznok 01-30-2012 08:04 PM

oh wow...you did score...if you need the leather belt let me know I am ordering this week from Brewer sewing supply.
You will need more shuttle pins I believe as well.
you need to tell us what the purpose of the tower thing in the center of her head is! ODD looking for sure...
Her wood just needs a light sanding and polishing....she really does look great!

sew1 01-30-2012 08:17 PM

You are so hooked. I too have a few. 5 treadles(some needing cleaning) and 2 up and running, along with Featherweights (2) 15-91 (2) 3/4 machines and others. It is so much fun seeing them come to life. ENJOY!!!

Andii 01-30-2012 08:32 PM

She's beautiful. I just saw a hint to remove rust from a cast iron skillet which might work for the peddle. Cut a raw potatoe in half and dip the exposed area in baking soda and use that as a cleaning instrument. The enzymes in the potatoes are supposed to react with the soda and work wonders. Good luck.

Jacquie, the tower looking thing is the upper tension. Called a "spring tension" or "leaf tension". :)

Painiacs 01-30-2012 09:52 PM

Great find!!

pinkberrykay 01-31-2012 03:47 AM

Thanks Charlee, I was going to go to the manual and look. I love having the manual, I think it may be worth more the the machine.:)

I have not named her yet, I should go back and ask the lady at the shop the name of the owner and go from there.

Is the "shuttle pin" the hook on end end of the cord??? If so I was just going to order one that already had one on it.:)

I think she means the bobbin inside of the shuttle? :)

You don't need to tear her apart...some advocate that for cleaning, but it's not necessary! If the machine moves freely, there's ABSOLUTELY no need to tear it apart! Clean it, get rid of the dust bunnies and grime, oil it up and use it! :)

I betchya you think you are done for awhile. NOT. Very nice machine and the decals are really nice. I have a New Home head that is in much, much worse shape. Most of the decals are gone but I can still see the outlines of them. I ws thinking of cleaning it up and repainting the decals. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. When I get to that project can I ask you to take really closeup pictures so I can use them as examples?

sewnbug 01-31-2012 09:37 AM

Great find. I love the old treadles.

quilter824 01-31-2012 09:43 AM

I just bought the same machine but mine was $20.Your cabinet is in better shape.Mine had a paper in it stamped 1906 and there was a medical dictionary from 1899.The manual wasnt there and I am trying to figure out how to thread her.Sewing machine shop cleaned her up and gave her a physical and new belt she works fine.

jljack 01-31-2012 09:46 AM

Great deal you got!! That New Home is very pretty, and the decals look great!! Sew-Classic.com has lots of parts for treadles, including the belt. Very reasonable, too.

Can't wait to see how it looks all finished!!

That "tower thing" is part of the tension/threading assembly on these. The thread goes through that tension part on the arm, then through a slot in the top of that tower thing, then down to the take up arm.
