According to Boye chart, Alvah takes a #13 shuttle and 14 needles.

I just bought the exact machine you have (Brunswick treadle), but my cabinet is missing the drawers on the side. I have all the accesories and the manual. I couldn't find a serial number on it, I wish I knew when it was made, just so I would know. No publishing date on the manual, and not as much info on Brunswick as Singer, but it's a good little machine

My machine has a serial number underneath the slide at the front. Mine looks just like physically but is badged as an Alvah. You are right. It IS a good little machine. We've done some research and narrowed the dates to between 1892-96. I'd love to find more info too!

Thanks, I didn't think to look at a removable part, since they can be replaced. Wow, over a hundred years old, that's really cool. I'll check for the number when I get home-thanks again!

Wow! Very sweet machine you have there. My pic is my "before". It will never look as good as yours. It sat in the damp for far too long. I need to take some good "after" shots.

Now I need to clarify. The serial number is stamped on the machine but you must completely remove the front shuttle plate in order to see it. Sliding it back just isn't far enough. ;)

I travel a lot for my job and happened to be in the neighborhood of Belvidere, IL. I went to the Boone Historical Society because they were supposed to have a display of National Sewing Machine items. I was disappointed; they really didn't have much at all. However, they did have this 1890 Eldredge model, purchased in 1890 for $23.50. I think ours must be closer to 1896 by the looks of it, note the curved base and angular shape, and the iron legs on the cabinet. The shuttle and cover were exactly the same, I took the cover off, and the serial number on this was 149xxxx; mine begins with 327. I wish I had taken a picture of the serial number, I will if I ever go back. Thanks for the info on the #, mine is a "before" too, I just bought it last Saturday, but since I have the attachments and the manual, I should be able to fix and use it.
