The wiring probably needs to be changed... As for the rest of it, you can go over it all and refurb it yourself, if you are so inclined. It's fun. Here's the best website I've found to guide you through restoring these machines:

Check out all the links on refurbishing. It's extremely thorough.

Wow! Thanks! She absolutely needs new wiring, but I am a diy-er, so maybe I'll at least look at it before taking it to someone else.

Congrats you will love it! I have a Singer 15-91 that I bought at a auction for $26 about 19 years ago and sew on it all the time.

super.... although i look at these old singers with fond memories... it's probably not the same one, but most of what i see here is like the old 201 that i used for years!!!!
as a young girl (and i mean young...started at 14yrs), i worked in a yarn shop... we did "finsih work" on customers sweaters... many wanted machine buttonholes,,, i did thousands!!! too funny.... we would "crochet front", hand sew grosgrain ribbon... then i would make "machine buttonholes" with the old "grist" attachment... the bottom teeth on that "puppy" are sharp and to get the sweater front under the presserfoot... we used "folded WAX PAPER" to slide it ... LOL.. then things got really easy when we discovered the clear plastic heavy vinyl!!! sorry to bore you girls, but could not resist sharing... those were the good old days.. oh, BTW... we got 25cents a buttonhole and $1.00 to sew on the ribbon!!!! IMAGINE!!!!
