I'm jealous!

aorlflood 11-03-2010 05:58 AM

You could always use Freida or Freesia as the first name and the grandmother's name as the middle name...like Freesia Mae, etc.

CarrieAnne 11-03-2010 06:04 AM

Lucky you!!!!!!!!! Thats Awesome!

dkabasketlady 11-03-2010 06:31 AM

prairiequeen 11-03-2010 06:59 AM

You should have bought a lottery ticket that day!

KaterTot 11-03-2010 07:32 AM

I SAW THAT AD ON FREECYCLE, too! I'm in Chelmsford and if I didn't have a cold, I might have responded. I wasn't sure if 1940 would be too large to be a small featherweight, so I skipped on by. GOOD FOR YOU :)

SNUGQUILT 11-03-2010 07:42 AM

WOW!!!! That's amazing! Congrats on a GREAT find!!!

zjsquiltymomma 11-03-2010 07:57 AM

Wow, you are so lucky. I have a black on that I purchased on e-bay, paid around $200 for her. Was disappointed at first, as she had a few scratches, but I got to thinking about it. Someone loved her enough to use her and not just put her in the closet. After doing some polishing up, she is beautiful in my eyes. Her name is "Black Beauty". You did good girl...

quilt3311 11-03-2010 10:19 AM

What a deal. Wish I could get one like that. I did get mine for $100 though, so figure that was a bargain. The case smelled horrible as it had been a basement for years. Put that out in the sun for a couple weeks and got the smell out of it. The machine worked great after I cleaned and oiled it.

Daleen 11-03-2010 11:26 AM

Diana, Hello from Central Ohio. I saw your posting about Featherweight machines. They're good workhorses, aren't they? I saw that you were wanting a 301. I have a good friend who sells Featherweight machines and she may have a 301. If you're interested, please check with Nancy. Her email is [email protected]. Have a great day, Daleen

Lucky you!! You should spell it "Freeda".

How funny - but you're so right since it was "free".

ORSunshineQuilter 11-03-2010 11:29 AM

EXCELLENT! What a find! Enjoy your Featherweight. I know I enjoy mine!

decky 11-03-2010 01:13 PM

Wow I wish I could find a FW for free. I have been checking Craigslist and the ones around here are going from $300 to over $500 and I decided that I wasn't going to pay that much for one.
Anyway have fun with your new FW

AngieS 11-03-2010 01:22 PM

ccthomas 11-03-2010 03:49 PM

What is free cycle? I have not heard of this one.

And does everyone name their sewing machines? I never even thought of giving a name! I am amazed. Now I am thinking!

brushandthimble 11-03-2010 03:55 PM

never happens to me:(

roseOfsharon 11-03-2010 03:58 PM

janiesews 11-03-2010 04:24 PM

That is great!! Enjoy them both.

annieshane 11-03-2010 04:45 PM

Gosh, I would have just about danced if that had happened to me. I recently bid on a Singer 301 and thought surely I would lose out, however, after 13 bids, I finally won a great condition machine for $202 plus $25 shipping. It sews like a dream! It does not have a case, but I am not complaining. It is excellent condition with a very few tiny scratches. Someone really took good care. I know you must have been so excited to discover your great fortune. You are also wise to realize how you could correct the problems. Now. you have a great story and beautiful machine....FREEEEE !!!

tellabella 11-03-2010 04:53 PM

Nothing sweeter than a freebie...and I thought my $70 find was sweet!!! Congrats...

Berta48 11-03-2010 06:02 PM

Why does everyone seem to like all these old outdated sewing machines?I like the new ones, but then I have never had an old one.Is it just to collect them?

Shemjo 11-03-2010 06:10 PM

I use mine for workshops and classes because it is light and not complicated. No electronic stuff to go goofy!

Annz 11-03-2010 06:23 PM

Wow I am happy for you.

penski 11-03-2010 06:29 PM

Hi Berta,

The older machines did not have a zigzag stitch, so their straight stitch is absolutely beautiful. Until you see the stitching, you won't understand what I mean.

They also just don't die. They are very well made, all metal, and if they are taken care of, could probably still be working hundreds of years from now.

The Featherweights are just adorable and sew beautifully. Most find that the case is molded from being stored in a basement and you have to watch for rust on the bottom as well, but mine is in fabulous condition and I love every scratch on it knowing it was well used by the prior owner.

Diane

dmackey 11-03-2010 07:24 PM

Well, I got an email again from the wonderful lady who gave me the Featherweight. It was owned by her grandmother, and her maiden name was "Eleanor Love". Isn't that a great name?

So, now I have to decide between Frieda, Freesia, and Lovie (LOVE, E.)!

I am very intrigued by the attachments and will have to give them a whirl. They are pretty dirty with some kind of tacky substance. Is it okay to clean them with Goo Gone?

Diane

Hi KaterTot!

I hope you are feeling better!

No offense, but I'm so glad I got to her first! LOL!

I think pretty much all the machines made in the 40s were in tables, which is why I assumed this was a Featherweight when I saw the description.

We like the old machines because the vast majority of them are very well made, not plastic wonders like the new machines of today. I sew with a Singer that was made in 1937 and sews as well as the day it was made; its a treadle
machine. I use my old machines, I am a quilter and make garments too. I also collect and use Singer Featherweights.
