THIS <http://charlotte.craigslist.org/atq/3766350114.html> is on my local c/l. Of course, I replied that I'd love to come see it first thing in the morning. Can you believe it? I check this compulsively, and today -- i didn't. four hours late, and probably too late. but, can you imagine?!!

Lara122 04-26-2013 05:02 AM

I got it! When I told her that my husband was angry with me, she let me have it for 100!!! Wow! The handle of the case is taped up but other than that the machine looks nice! A f25 O 363 is the only number I see on it. One of its little rubber feet is missing But the decal on the bed looks great.

leaha 04-26-2013 05:04 AM

Wonderful, so glad you got it and know it will have a great home with you. Post pictures when you can.

gramquilter2 04-26-2013 08:07 AM

Enjoy sewing on your "new" machine.

Prim Quilts 04-26-2013 08:55 AM

yay, I am so happy for you.

ArchaicArcane 04-26-2013 10:35 AM

Congrats!! I notice too that the case lining is different than most of the ones we usually see.
I'm thinking that has to do with the older series of machines. Yours is one of 20,000 with serial numbers allocated July 11, 1939, and I'm guessing that it has a leather handle, yes?

tenngal 04-26-2013 12:21 PM

I hope you get it !!!!!

Twolees 04-26-2013 06:03 PM

Congrats. Happy for you.

Lara122 04-26-2013 06:19 PM

yes, Tammi -- most of the handle is taped with black electrician's tape, but where it joins the case, I think it is leather. I am *finally* sitting down, and I refuse to get up to go look!! =))

I will get some pictures on tomorrow. I still haven't had time to plug it in. I can tell you my family was like . . "" ohhkay "" even after I explained that it was like a holy grail for a nickel. thanks guys =((

I really appreciate the congratulations!! I know you all 'get it'!! =)))

Hummer Lady 04-26-2013 06:41 PM

You bet, we "Get IT"

Congratulations, Lara! I'm equally trilled for you! I've gotten 2 for tremendously low prices ($30 & $60), and my heart is STILL racing. I love these little ladies. I take mine to workshops and to mini-group sew-ins all the time. Such a great stitch and delightful to sew with.

You can get replacement "feet" called bed cushions from April 1930's for $5.95 with not postage. They arrive in a couple of days. If one is missing, probably the rest are bad. She also has replacement screws if you need them. I just replaced a couple of sets for two elderly ladies in my quilt guild.

Have fun with her!

cabbagepatchkid 04-27-2013 05:16 AM

Congratulations!!!! Don't you just love Craigslist?

callen 04-27-2013 06:07 AM

Congrats to you.........she looks in very good shape.

MimiBug123 04-27-2013 10:02 AM

Yea! So happy for you! I hope you enjoy yours as much as I enjoy my two. Their names are Phoebe and Fiona and they are precious girls!

I cannot get pictures to upload -- I have been trying all afternoon! The light and the motor work fine -- I think it is on 'bobbin winding' as the needle doesn't move when the motor runs, but the wheel in front of the handwheel moves. The belt is slipping also, I think. Trying to 'learn' about them, but dial up is NOT cooperating today =//

citruscountyquilter 04-27-2013 11:25 AM

Congratulations! Make sure it is well lubricated before you use it otherwise you may seize the motor. I have three featherweights and would not part with any of them. Love, love, love them and use them all the time. You should have no problem getting the foot or any parts for them for that matter.

Janis 04-27-2013 09:38 PM

I am so happy for you. I also have one from that same set of serial numbers. Ours are just over 2,000 apart in numbers. Featherweights are great little machines. What are you going to name her?

I'm guessing you have the bobbin winding thing figured out. Just turn the chrome knob towards the back of the machine, it will get the needle moving again.

The belt part number is: 194144
I used to get most of my parts from Sew-Classic, Jenny is very good and her prices are very reasonable.

You can find the bed cushions on her site as well:

And the Singer Motor Lube as well:

here is the belt . . it doesn't feel like it is in bad shape, but it isn't connecting like it should either . . .

the belt doesn't grab enough to turn the needle. it will spin the bobbin winder though . . . Not going to ask her to come on anymore, until I have oiled and greased her! =))

here are the attachments -

this is the missing cushion . . . what is that on it?! stupid question, I know - as I can see it and touch it and you guys can't. Feels like metal!

ArchaicArcane 04-28-2013 09:51 AM

Have you adjusted the belt? It should be just tight enough that it doesn't slip. The little featherweights have tiny motors, so they don't like the extra strain of a tighter belt. It takes a little experimenting to get it right.

I haven't seen you mention a manual, you'll find tons of information in it, you can download one from here:
http://ismacs.net/free-sewing-machin...ls-list.html#S

That stuff where the cushion is, uh,.. well it IS the cushion. Sometimes they harden and crack, sometimes they turn to goo and look like someone schmushed bubblegum on it. Sometimes it hardens again after that. In the center of that mess, there will be a screw. You'll need to gently excavate that, and the rest of the cushion can be removed by chipping it off and out.

Lara122 04-28-2013 10:31 AM

oh my goodness!! I never would have guessed that *that* was the cushion!! wow!! and thank you SO much for the link to the manual!! I am such a doofus today . . . ran down the street to use Scott's work's wireless. Got carried away, let the battery die on the laptop. ALL of those pre-loaded pages, schwick. =//.

ArchaicArcane 04-29-2013 11:33 AM

Yeah, it's amazing what happens to those cushions. I think that oil contributes to the "goo" stage.

That Ismacs site is amazing. The number of manuals they've managed to collect and archive in one place is such an incredible contribution to the sewing community. Interestingly, there are a couple of different versions of the 221 manual. Some have more detail than others about maintenance, so download all that you can find and compare them. You can learn a ton from them.

I've done that. :) I make sure now that my laptops go into sleep mode when the battery is close to dead. You can find that in Control Panel - Power Options. :)
