Have you tested it out yet? Does the stitch selector move freely?

This was the first machine I sewed on--in 9th grade in 1959. My mother also bought one but ws afraid for us to touch the dials or use the cams. She may as well have bought a straight stitch. My sister still sews on it.

You're lucky. I see a lot of nice machine at very cheap prices on Chicago Craigslist. My dad is to old to drive and I can't get my brother to go and check them out. Hope they some when I go home in August or September.

You lucky gal! I received my 401A as a graduation present in 1980 (used, obviously. These beauties were made in the '50's). The salesman told my folks that it is the BEST model Singer ever made, and I agree. It will go through 6 layers of denim easily. I still use mine more than any of my other machines. Would love to find another someday as a backup "just in case".

I'm learning, I already love it. Not sure what I will name Her or Him. It belonged to a Man. I think He did alterations or maybe sewing. He used it until He was 92. I thought that was great. I got this info from the Grandson who sold it to me. Joy

I love mine. It is my favorite machine! I use it the most. I'm still finding more things about it! Fun. It's a workhorse!

Very nice ! Looks like it was well taken care of

I think those 400 series machines are all good. The 404 is great for learning to sew. The 403 is right up there with the 401 if not better- there is less to go wrong with them. The 401 just does so much!!! Getting one in working order is wonderful when it happens. These are all metal gear driven, slant needle so you can actually see what you are doing. What's not to like.
