I was at an estate sale here in Lubbock this morning, and the asking price for the 401 that they were selling was $225. I spent a lot of time going over the attachments with the seller and visiting with him, since we discovered that we worked at the same small office together in 1978. This machine had the original box of cams and attachments and a variety of other attachments, some of which were not for that machine. The cabinet was ok. I didn't sew on it, since I wasn't interested in it, but I did buy a couple of attachments and enjoyed the visit.
If I go back tomorrow for half price day, I imagine the machine will still be there, since today's price is a little too high for our market.
Concerning testing the machine, you could at least get it threaded up and turn the hand wheel to see if it will sew. You should be able to find that manual online.
