I agree - don't spend a lot of money on a machine - the price is right. Check to make sure everything moves - knobs do freeze up if they aren't used regularly. Check to see if it sews like Sue already mentioned.
Those old ones can be real gems. No matter what you sew 99% will be likely straight stitches. If everything works you won't need a newer machine. We have a couple threads on here about the Japanese machines - you might benefit from reading through the comments: http://www.quiltingboard.com/vintage...s-t207877.html AND http://www.quiltingboard.com/vintage...s-t207880.html

I used to sell new machines and often the new ones can be very fussy and frustrating. That sure is a pretty machine.
I prefer the older machines, do most of my sewing with machines that are at least 25-100 years old.

I agree with the suggestion for new sewists to start with a used machine before spending lots of money on a new machine. Your needs may change once you start sewing and you can then spend the big money on what you really want. If the machine operates smoothly, the tension is good, it looks like the machine would work for what you need.

I agree with this. In our area a woman bought everything she'd need for a quilting room & found out she didn't have the time or patience for it. COST(she said):Aprox. $25,000. was selling (2 mos. down the road)$8,000.

Oh.

My.

Gosh.

Really? What could cost -that- much?

-Cecilia, who has that pesky fifty-cents-per-pound rule... ;-)
