Ooooh! The suspense is killing me!
I have a dear friend who knows I make quilts and just about anything else involving fabric. Her DH told her last night she could give me his mother's old sewing machine, (he is over sixty, and remembers his mom using it when he was a kid) since she would have loved knowing it would be used by another quilter. My friend has had it in her basement since they married many years ago because she thought it was ugly! I asked her what it looked like since I have never been in her basement. Her exact words were "I don't know much about it except that is a tacky black and gold singer". She is bringing it to me tomorrow, and I am so excited, I could not sleep last night! This will be my very first antique machine and I will be on this forum to get any help offered. Wish me luck!

oh goodie! we love things to look forward to!
Before I read black and gold I was worrying it would be a singer touch and sew :) If it's black and singer, it will be a treasure! |
Congrats! The tacky black and gold machines are my favorite.
If it's too old and tacky you can send it my way. :) Rodney |
you must take a pix when you get it -- we are all on pins and needles waiting to see

Oh how I would love a friend with a tacky black and gold singer! Enjoy your "new" machine!
|
can't wait to see it!
|

I am so looking forward to seeing your new baby. Congratulations!
|
I love black and tacky machines too! I can't wait to see it either.
|
Oh my how wonderful! But let me advise you...do not look on EBay, Craig's List or Goodwill.com! One machine creates the need for other's! LOL I got a 1955 Featherweight for Christmas and enjoyed bringing her back to life and since I learned how to sew on a treadle I started a search for one. Found a beautiful but rusty and dirty 1923 Red Eye -66 on Craig's List had to have it. Cleaned and polished for over a month off and on and she came out beautiful ! It's addicting restoring and saving these beauties. AND yesterday picked up a 1901 28K hand wheel coffin style. She even sews and in good shape. Got home and a friend called and said her brother has an old machine he is going to toss...so that will be #4!!!!!! I can tell by your excitement this could be you....Beware! You've been warned! LOL

Oh the waiting is stressful!!! PHOTOS PLEASE
|
Tacky is good!!!
|
Congratulations! Anxious to see it!
|
Oooh I am so excited for you! I LOVE black and gold tacky Singer machines the best!
|
Wonderful gift. Now, of course you need to find her a sister. Maybe a "tacky" black Singer Featherweight or a 301A? Of course, then you'll want to spread out to the cousins -- a lovely New Home or one of the vintage Japanese class 15 clones. Oh, the possibilities are endless!

Christmas in July : )

*is quite literally waiting on pins and needles* LOL
*shrugs* cat dumped a pin holder on the floor. I have yet to get them all gathered up. I have a feeling one or two pins may still be lurking about. |
did you get the machine?!
|
Those tacky machines can be a lot of fun! :0
|
I'm wondering what tacky black means, if it's just how the machine was described by someone who sees it as ugly,or an actual finish description. So, I googled it and came up with 'ugliest female singer's '. I still don't know, guess ill have to wait til we get to see the machine.

Ahem....Pardon me Madam, ......but is there any news to report at this time?

must have been a treadle, and she is still strapped to it trying to drag it up the front steps.
|
Stumbled on this thread. Thought, "Oh good, it's old enough the pictures will be posted." Not so, the suspense builds.

She is here! I have done some research on her and this is what I do know so far. If she were a motorcycle, she would be called a "basket case". She is very dirty, rusty, and missing a few parts that I could see right off. According to ISMACS, she is a model 127, made on 10/26/1926, is one of 20,000 made, and her condition would be rated a 4.
I am not ready to take on a repair and recondition of this magnitude so I will probably try to find someone interested in doing a recondition, or possibly someone who wants her for parts. I will never turn down a free machine, but sometimes they are given away because the owner thinks they are a total loss. In this case the owners son just wants to know someone is using his mother's machine. He even gave me permission to sell her if I could find a way to restore her. If anyone is interested, please PM me. |
NOOO!! you have a 201!!! One of the best, and a worthy one to fix up!
|
MacyBaby is 100% correct. This is a 201-2 (Gear drive, no belts)
The 201-2 is like the Jeep of Singer domestic machines, It will roll over anything you can feed under it |
