hoping someone can help me. I have inherited my Nana's Singer 99K handcrank. I have oiled it up and it still clucks a little but not much and turns smoothly. However as I have started to peice a quilt on it it gathers the bottom fabric. How and what do I adjust to stop this.

It sounds as if your top tension may be too tight. I would loosen that a bit, put in a new needle & make sure the bobbin area is clean/ lint free & bobbin is wound smoothly and inserted correctly. Use scraps and practice as you make adjustments until you get the tension right.

Hi, yes could be a host of things, try all things above and see if they help. Helpful wasn't I, just wanted to drop in and hope you get it figured out.

Thanks for all your help. I changed the needle rethreaded the machine, loosen the tension. Then tried to make the presser foot pressure less without success. So I opened the machine (took face plate off) and discovered that the spring is missing. So my next question is where could I buy one, or what is the part number. Again any help is most appreciated. What spring art you missing?

The long one that is around the shaft? That lift and lower the presser foot. Don't know what else to call it. Denese

Ok so an internal spring is missing. There are springs that go outside the pressure shaft and some machines have springs that go inside the pressure shaft. I will have to look and see which it is when I go home. If it is internal, you won't see it unless you take apart the shaft. Look in the sticky notes for sewing machine resources and then in there should be a link for a TFSR manual. That manual has tons of info on the Singer 99. The most knowledgeable people are on the Victorian sweatshop forum...
