Singer 128 withcoffin topcarrying case
 

This machine is in pristine shape. I look forward to using it. Anybody familiar with this machine?

Coffin tops tend to be 28, but 128 often came in bent wood cases. These are very similar models, the difference is the auto tread release on the 128, while the 28 top tensioner has a loab you push in manually. There are some differences to the bobbin winder too, but pretty much the same function. It runs nicely, I know of two cases where the owner has taken on a 28 and it has turned out to be a favorite, one of them swears it does the best top stitching of all her machines. I was suprised how fast it stitched. At the time someone told me long bobbins were slower than round bobbin models, but I can't say I complained about the speed at all. It was fitted with electrical motor and light. I hope your machine comes with a box of accessories, a few extra bobbins and the manual. If it doesn't new bobbins are still made for this model, and accessories can easily be found if needed. The are pfd versions of the manual on the web.

I have a 128-23 machine in a bentwood case. Nice machine. I don't do a whole lot of sewing, however, in May my brother had some bandana handkerchief fabric that needed hemmed. I used the 128-23 with the narrow hemming foot 120842. It did good, except for the corners. I'm sure it was operator error.:o

My 128k is a handcrank in a bentwood case. Late 1950s with a long bobbin. Stitches well, but the shuttle is a bit noisy but looks so pretty. I like taking it out to the garden to sew on nice days..

HettyB, I think there is an adjustment that could be made in the shuttle area, that may help some. I think it is the nature of long shuttles to be a little noisier.

A 128 maybe a little noisy compared to a 201, but the electical 128 I used was both fast and smooth running, at least for my expectations at the time. I agree with Janey, there might be som adjustment for it, and very often (!) an extra through cleaning and oiling sort out issues with noise and stitch quality.

I took what I could apart and following the YouTube links here, cleaned her up and oiled everything. Stitch quality is great and the rattling was less that when I first got it. There is a vintage sewing machine dealer/servicing shop about an hour from here, and plan on taking it in (when they get a treadle that I want). Mostly it is just the shuttle rattling but it is a pleasure to use.

If you are looking at putting a 128 in a treadle, you need to know that treadle bases for 3/4 sized machine don't come up all that often Glad you are getting it happier and willing to serve. Love hand cranks.
