Singer 221 metal bobbins

I just got a 221....there is only one bobbin with it. Can any of you direct me to where I can buy more?
TIA,
Deanna (Cottage Dee)

MimiBug123 11-11-2012 05:25 AM

I think it uses a regular class 66 bobbin. You can find those just about anywhere--even WalMart.

abdconsultant 11-11-2012 05:27 AM

Order them on line , google ///// singer 221 featherweight and you'll find plenty of suppliers

Thanks! I am going on a Retreat this Wednesday-Sunday, and will be using my baby. On my way to WalMart...Thanks again!!!!

J Miller 11-11-2012 07:19 AM

The Featherweights do not use Class 66 bobbins. They use the 221/301 bobbins and you can get them at Sew-Classic:

Don't buy bobbins at WM. They're junk. Do what Joe says.

Prim Quilts 11-11-2012 10:42 AM

My local Hancocks sells Featherweight bobbins. I just recently discovered this.

Thanks, Joe, I'm taking your advice!

MimiBug123 11-11-2012 11:37 AM

I would say do what Joe says. Maybe the fact that it worked with mine was just a fluke, but I didn't have any problems! He knows way more about these things than I ever will, for sure!

J Miller 11-11-2012 12:44 PM

MimiBug123,

Now I'm curious. Since the 221 bobbin is larger in diameter and skinnier than a Class 66 bobbin I would have never thought the 66 would fit let alone work. I gotta check my FW out with a 66 just to see what happens.

Joe

Cottage Dee 11-11-2012 12:49 PM

Joe, Waiting with bated breath!!....lol

thepolyparrot 11-11-2012 01:16 PM

MimiBug, some people (mistakenly) call the Singer 99 a "Featherweight" - is it possible that someone sold you a 99 by that name?

The 99 does take the 66 bobbin. :)

sak658 11-11-2012 01:19 PM

I just bought a pkg of 4 bobbins from my sewing machine repair shop...cheap..Picked up my Janome from having it serviced...

J Miller 11-11-2012 01:38 PM

MimiBug,

No way in the world could a Class 66 bobbin work in a FW. I just went down and tried one in my FW and the bobbin case would not even fit all the way in. The 66 bobbin is almost twice as thick as a FW bobbin.

So, if you did use a 66 bobbin in your machine, I'm going to have to agree with thepolyparrot, you don't have a FW.

Joe

joycet 11-12-2012 07:48 AM

Featherweights and 301's both use class 15 bobbins. they do not use class 66. those are for models 66, 99 and 201.

NO THEY DON'T. Class 15 bobbins are as thick or thicker than the Class 66 bobbins. No way would they fit.

Singers that use the 221/301 bobbins: late 9W-7, 221, 222, 301. The Class 66 and 15 will not fit.

Joe ..... who will do a comparison pic of these bobbins in a while.

J Miller 11-12-2012 09:38 AM

4 Attachment(s)
OK, the first picture is a comparison of Class 15, Class 221/301, and Class 66 bobbins.

The second picture is of a FW bobbin in the FW bobbin case.

The third picture is a Class 66 bobbin in a FW bobbin case.

The fourth picture is a Class 15 bobbin in a FW bobbin case.

As you can plainly see, the Class 15 and 66 bobbins are just too thick to even begin to fit in the Feather Weight (221, 222, or 301) bobbin case.

I hope this eases up the confusion.

Joe

Joe, it's nice for you to show pics and to take the time to do this. A simple visit to SewClassic would get someone the right bobbins!

Candace,
I put the link to the FW bobbin page at Sew Classic in the 5th post of this thread. I guess sometimes people just skip the existing responses and start commenting.

And I was wrong, there is another machine that can use the FW bobbins. The Kenmore 120-491 uses a bobbin that's so close to the FW bobbin they are interchangeable.

Yup!!!!!!!

Mizkaki 11-12-2012 12:29 PM

Joe,

The Kenmore 120- bobbin is designated as 'H'. I have an old package of these and it says that they fit the Singer 221.
I haven't tried them to see if they fit the bobbinwinder pin on the 221, but size-wise then are exactly the same.

I went to my sewing repair man here in Michigan, I did call this morning to make sure he had them. He said of course! So this afternoon I went over and got 5....$.85 each, but I now have them in hand. I asked him what size they were, after looking them up in the catalog....he said "size 20" So that should settle that, right? Anyway, now I can fill these up with different colors.....I am making an Irish chain, and also the Baby quilt I saw on this Board a couple of weeks ago...taking it all to Shipshewana IN on Wednesday.

I have a couple OEM bobbins for my 120-491 but not many. If I ever get the tension problems figured out I'll need some more.

Do you have a Kenmore 120- series that uses those bobbins? If not would be willing to trade some brandy new FW bobbins for them?

Joe

MimiBug123 11-12-2012 01:15 PM

Joe, I must have gotten the bobbin tins mixed up. I got another one out of my 66 tin and it wouldn't EVEN work in the featherweight. It worked in the Spartan, but not the FW. Sorry for my bad! I'm a dingbat (according to DH), but I can tell a FW from a 99!

Mizkaki 11-12-2012 01:29 PM

Joe,

As usual I'm out of town until Friday. I'll look for those H bobbins then and PM you.

Joe, I have an ancient Bernina, model # 117 K or L, that uses similar bobbins. I have been told they are interchangeable but have never tried because I don't want to screw up any machine trying to test out this theory.

If you have a Country Stitches around there, they might sell them. They do here in my town. Take your bobbin with you if you do go there, make sure you get the right thing. As Joe said, not a 66. Takes special bobbin

Grammie Sharon 11-12-2012 03:09 PM

Deanna,
I have a FW 221 and I found this site on the internet. It is called www.april1930s.com
I ordered bobbins and they were very prompt in shipping them to me. I think they were between $6-8 for 8 or 10 bobbins. Or there is a sewing shop in Flint called All Sew that as FW supplies. I bough my 1/4 in foot there. that's not too far from you and it was easy to get to. I live in Romeo so it isn't too far. Deanna I'll pm you and maybe I can tell you a little about the guild I belong to.

MimiBug,
Not to worry. Things get mixed up all the time.

I bought 221, 301 bobbins in a package at Ben Franklin store in Ripon Wisc. They work perfectly in my 301. Not expensive.

I just order from www.Shop.Sew-Classic.com for my Mom's Singer 201. The only drawback is you have a minimum order of $3.50. The part she needed was a bobbin wheel that cost $0.49 So I got her some needles.

ms sewer 11-13-2012 08:47 AM

I just ordered a bobbin wheet tire for my Mom' Singer 201 from www.Shop.Sew-Classic.com. Very inexpensive.

J Miller 11-13-2012 12:51 PM

The bobbin tyres and bobbins get cheaper as you order more. In my last order I had 10 Singer size bobbin tyres. Plus a bunch of spool pegs and other goodies.

No it doesn't! The class 66 bobbins are too tall and too small. It uses a 221 class bobbin. Do NOT buy them from Wal-mart or JoAnn's.
I buy mine from either of these websites:www.sew-classic.com or 221parts.com

Go back a page or two and check out my pictorial on bobbins and FWs. I beat you to the "No it doesn't" part. LOL :D

Your pictures of the bobbins are so clear and well marked. You are a wonderful asset to this board!

Thank you for all of your contributions.

There are many places to buy the bobbins - JoAnn's, Hancocks and online. I like to have a lot of bobbins so I can pre-wind them with the colors I use most. They're not expensive, either. Enjoy your machine!
