My Mom bought one before I was born. I learned to sew on it in 7th grade home ec. Then came the 70s and knits and the 401 didn't like knits. My Dad bought her a basic Kenmore with stretch stitches. The Kenmore sits on top of the closed Singer cabinet to this day. I've opened it up and found the stitch selector frozen solid, dripped in some Tri-Flow and closed it again. One of these days it will be mine to bring home to service, then use again.

I bought my 401A in 1958; has been in hospital only once a couple years ago. Sews like a dream; it is my go-to machine always. My Viking pouts and my FW waits longingly.

I got mine as a HS graduation gift from my folks back in 1980 (yes, it was used). It's been my closest companion ever since.

I love mine - just found it for $65 with all the attachments!
