Singer 401A

Bought my first 401A years ago. Walked into Goodwill, and there it was. Hearing a voice, you know you want me. So I spent 30.00 on the machine in the original cabinet. Sewed many prom dresses, quilts, doll clothes, and drapes. Alas in the middle of making my last prom dress for my youngest daughter, it started to let me know it would be no longer in use. I went on ebay and found another 401A for 40.00. That was four year ago. Still going strong. Still making quilts, drapes, and clothing for the grandkids now. I love the 401A. Best machine I have owned.

Agreed, the 401A is a very strong machine and a joy to use!!! I have several. Enjoy

Just used mine this afternoon. DGS "needed" a superheroes pillowcase so he started trying to thread it with red thread for me. Not bad for a first try. Had it started correctly. So I showed him exactly how it was supposed to go. Will be interesting to see how well he does next time.

I love mine too. $50 in a table full of goodies from someone who loved to sew. And she sews sew well!

I recently purchased a 401a, for 30.00 with original cabinet. My Viking is taking a rest, cause I only use the 401a, love it!!!

Yes the 401s are great machines. Just curious though, what was so wrong with the first one that it couldn't be serviced or repaired and put back into service?

I bought mine new back in 1958. She still sews like a dream. Never had a problem with her that a good check up and cleaning did not fix. I have more modern machines but always go to my 401A for most of my sewing projects. The others come and go but she is always there ready to get busy when I need her.

I was wondering the same thing. Hope you can get it serviced and use it again.

I, too was wondering about fixing the first one. I thought that one of the things that is so great about the 401 is that they run forever.

Got mine for free from a friend at work. Of all my machines, she's the youngest.
