Thank you!

I just received a package in the mail today that Skip (Glenn) sent me. I am completely floored by the kindness and generosity the members here have shown me. Skip and the other men associated with QB put together a lap quilt for me that is just incredible. They used a quilt as you go method that I would like to learn. Every block is bound separately and somehow the blocks were stitched together without the stitching showing. Near as I can tell, it's magic. I still haven't figured out how it was done. It's obvious the guys put some serious time and effort in putting this together for me. The workmanship is outstanding! I'm not sure who made it, but there's even one block with a sewing machine with my name embroidered on it! The man who made it even hand quilted around the various items in the picture! That's just one highlight, the work on all of it is first rate!

I also received a hand woven scarf and hand towel from Roger Young along with a note explaining that he doesn't quilt but does weave. I can only guess at how much time he spent on them but they are incredible! I am amazed that Glenn and everyone else were able to put all this together all back channel. I never knew a thing until the box arrived today. Great Job Guys! I know how hard it is to arrange something like this and coordinate it without the recipient getting wind of it. :)

Thank you to everyone who participated in making this quilt! It's something I will treasure and I will be bringing it to the hospital with me.
I'm very sorry I still haven't found my camera's computer cord. :( As soon as I do, I will be posting pictures.
Thank you again to everyone who made this happen and to Skip for putting it all together.

Rodney,

I'm glad you like it. I'm really happy I was invited to make a square. It was a pleasure to do it.

Take care and heal well.

That is fantastic. Aren't friends just the sweetest !
I for one will be glad when you find your camera cord, or if someone can take pics with their phone and e mail them to you, you can post them.

That is a wonderful surprise.....you are very much appreciated by all of us Rodney! I don't post much in the Vintage Machines section, but I do read each and every post in this section, and I look forward to each post. Your knowledge is wonderful and it's great that you're willing to share it with us. You and your family are in our prayers.

Stitchnripper 04-11-2015 06:09 AM

Ditto! I'm not a quilter but Glenn was gracious to allow all who wanted to participate.

What a great and thoughtful surprise, that gift, and knowing that all of us that absorbs all your good information is wishing you a speedy recovery should get you home soon.

monopas 04-11-2015 09:48 AM

Rodney, would you like me to come down there with my Bag of Random [Computer] Cords and see if I've got something that fits? Because the no pictures thing is painful!

MFord 04-11-2015 11:23 AM

Awesome, guys! Rodney, every time you wrap that quilt around you, you will feel all the love and prayers that went into it. What a treasure!

Carol34446 04-11-2015 12:07 PM

Praying surgery goes well and your healed and home soon.

sdhaevrsi 04-11-2015 12:49 PM

Rhonda 04-11-2015 12:58 PM

Love it when a plan comes together LOL What great hearted guys we have on here! Prayers and thoughts go with you Rodney for your surgery!

Gerbie 04-11-2015 02:37 PM

What a wonderful tribute for a friend. I have met through this board some really neat individuals, who I will probably never get to meet in person, but feel as though I have known them for years and some I email on a regular basis. Sorry to hear that you will be going into the hospital for surgery, did not know until now, but prayers are with you and your family and for a speedy recovery. You offer so much to all on this board who need info on vintage machines, repair, parts or just your pure knowledge. Can't wait to see pics of your quilt.

SteveH 04-11-2015 04:42 PM

Yeah, we "forged" the squares and then Glenn magicked their butts together....

Rodney 04-11-2015 06:52 PM

I think I have the camera problem solved. I have my daughter's camera battery on the charger. As long as there's no problems I should be able to get some pictures posted tomorrow.
Thank you everyone for your kindness and your thoughts and prayers. It means a lot to me to have this many people pulling for me.
Thank you,
Rodney

Rodney, praying that things go well for you and that the surgery fixes whatever it is suppose to. Really appreciate you input on all the discussions.

There is a lady made quilt in the works, too. I doubt if it is too late.
My DH made one of those manmade quilt blocks. When he heard Glenn was doing a quilt for Rodney, DH wanted to pitch in. He has NEVER sewn before. He made a block, quilted it and bound it AND it looks good - all on a little Singer 99 HC. How's that for a guy??? Oh and he does read here some times and he even posted a tutorial we did with Glenn (in my name) about machine finish.

I got a kick out of doing a block too. It’s not my first block piecing, but it’s my first completed “quilt”, since I hadn’t ever put binding on before. I made the entire thing with my 1910 Singer 28K2 Hand Crank machine setting on a folding TV tray. Of course, I have an excellent coach and teacher here to help me, but I did all of the sewing and most of the cutting (I raided my wife’s strip and squares tubs for my pieces).

That quilt is a real blessing! Heal quickly and I hope you don't have any residual pain afterwards.

You're a better vintage seamster than I am CD. I made shorts on a HC 66 a few months back and it was so hard to control the fabric with only one hand. Let's say the shorts weren't my best work.
My block was the first I've ever pieced or bound, and was done on an motor driven 320K2

NapaJohn 04-12-2015 07:29 PM

Rodney,

I'm really glad you like the quilt. You've always seemed like a very nice man, always patient, kind and willing to help whenever you could. More than anything, I hope that this surgery eliminates the melanoma from your life once and for all. Hang in there. You have a big heart and a great attitude.

Just in case you're interested, my block was made with a Lady Kenmore 89, with the exception of the writing which was done on a Singer 301.

Good luck with your procedure.

John

Thank you everyone! CD I love that picture of you making the block.
I HAVE PICTURES! Elayne was kind enough to help me hang the quilt in her studio so we could get some good pictures of the quilt. It's been raining here and I don't have any suitable places to get decent pictures inside here at home.

First the quilt:

Now for the scarf and wash cloth!

The pictures don't do the quilt or the scarf and washcloth justice. I was hoping the signatures would show up a bit better. The quilting on the blocks is awesome and now I have two sewing machines with my name on them. ;) The scarf has a lot of textural detail in the weaving that the camera didn't pick up and the wash cloth feels really great in my hands.
Thank you very much Skip for putting this together and thank you again to all the men of QB for doing this for me. I will be taking the quilt to the hospital when I go in on Thursday.
Rodney

EDITED Due To fat fingered typist.

manicmike 04-13-2015 08:24 PM

Heavens, that picture block is extraordinary! What show off... I mean exceptionally talented person created it? :p I could barely embroider my own name (see bottom, second from left), and here's something embroidered that most of us wouldn't be able to draw
Talented indeed. Well done.
And only two more days of pain and discomfort Rodney. Rather selfishly, I hope you're back online soon. You can let us know the good and bad of it all where the good things will vastly outweigh the other, learning to walk again then back into the acquisition of more treasures.
Best of luck, and get back out of the hospital ASAP: They're full of sick people!
Mike

Glenn 04-15-2015 05:45 AM

The guys and I really wanted to do this for you. They did the work. I just sewed them together. I made one block and my wife and I made the sewing machine block. It was fun. I hope all goes well for you and as Mike said get out the hospital fast to many sick people there. Thank you but the guys are the ones to be thanked.

fktsewing 04-15-2015 03:56 PM

Rodney, I hope you get through your surgery and heal quickly!! I will be praying for you as I am sure everyone on this board will---they are amazing people!

Jeanette Frantz 04-16-2015 07:11 PM

Rodney, Lots of prayers and good wishes are on their way to and for you and your family. Each time you use that quilt, you'll think of all the guys who put this together. I am grateful to all of the guys who participated in this. I hope you know there's another quilt that will be on the way before too long! God Bless you and your family!

I pray for you to get the best doctors, the best nurses and the best food. Sounds like you already have the best friends. a quick recovery so you can be back on board.

SteveH 04-17-2015 08:11 AM

Rodney, I hope and pray that everything went well. We all know you will need some time, and we're here when you're ready!

costumegirl 04-17-2015 09:07 AM

Rodney - Keeping you in my thoughts. Take one day at a time and have a quick recovery.

Rodney 04-22-2015 01:45 PM

I got home last night at about 5PM. Things went very well. Better than expected actually. I brought the quilt with me and it was perfect. The size is perfect for someone to cover up with when in a hospital bed. The quilt also received A LOT of favorable comments from the various people coming in and out of my room. :)
I'm taking the same amount of pain meds as I did before my surgery but my pain is zero. My pain never was completely gone before and I'm not even near done healing yet. I think in time I won't need any pain meds any more. It's something to look forward to. I'm also getting around ok and that will only get better in time and when I get fitted for a new leg as well. Another benefit: I've spent the better part of the last 4 years with at least some long term open wounds with some serious odor issues. Think "Roadkill". The smell is gone. I also expect complete healing this time and no more open wounds in the future.
My wife and I were talking and looking back this is a decision that I probably should have made sooner. The benefits just so far outweigh the inconvenience of losing what was at best a marginal leg.
Thank you again everyone for the quilt. I used it the entire time I was in the hospital and it's nice knowing I have so many friends looking out for me.:)

MFord 04-22-2015 01:57 PM

Rodney - so glad you're home and your surgery went so well! And no pain - that's such a tremendous blessing! I'm sure all the prayers and good thoughts for you helped as well as the hugs that came with your quilt.

Continued prayers for swift healing and a good "bionic" leg! (As my GD calls it - her dad has a friend with one.)

sdhaevrsi 04-22-2015 04:45 PM

Rodney, thank you for updating us. The news about your pain level being at "0" for the first time in awhile is just great news! The pros are sounding far more important than the cons for you, and I appreciate you sharing that with us. Some of us may benefit from your experience, too, someday.

KenZ 04-22-2015 07:18 PM

Thanks for letting us know that you are home and not inpain.
