This is a treadle I bought at an auction. I works wonderfuly, but I have never seen a cabinet like this before. The machine comes up with help on a chain but I lift it up because the wood is fragile and I don't want to harm it in anyway. Have any of you seen a cabinet like this before?

Quilt4u 06-23-2011 05:48 AM

QuiltnNan 06-23-2011 08:10 AM

i've seen one, but it was a very long time ago. are there little shelved inside the end panels?

sandy14 06-23-2011 09:30 AM

This is so beautiful. I have never seen one like it and in really good condition.

Did you get it through E-Bay?

I learned to sew on my grandmother's treadle also. I just loved sewing on it.

Thanks for sharing.

I bought it at an auction in a very small town. Was a family piece.
Yes there are shelf pocket inside the "wings".
You are supposed to be able to open the top and the machine pops up...the chain pulls the machine up. I adjusted it(chain) a bit after I got it but the machine is heavy and I did not want anything to get damaged.

montanajan 06-23-2011 12:24 PM

No, have not seen a cabinet like this - like it a lot.

Lostn51 06-23-2011 01:34 PM

I have a Damascus that raises with a chain, when you lift the lid the chain is attached to it and the machine and the front of the treadle will fold up for use.

Not with the drawers the swing out like that, but yes to the chain used to bring the machine up. Many old treadles had cabinets with that type of setup to help lift the machine up.
Just to name a few would be the National Co and Davis Co.

Is that a Minnesota A? Will you please post pictures of just the machine and of the area for the chain lift.

Very nice looking machine! Congrats, and enjoy that beauty!

quilt addict 06-23-2011 02:46 PM

I have heard of the lifting configuration as "elevator cabinets". I have one.

I have never seen the swing out sides though.

Very nice.

Greyhound Mom 06-23-2011 02:51 PM

I saw a treadle with a chain in the little thrift store here in town. It has been sitting in there for oh...about a month or so. The cabinet is almost completely rotted and the machine is in terrible shape. I don't know anything about them at all or I would buy it just to play with it....

Yours is absolutely gorgeous! I've never seen a cabinet like that although I have seen the drawers numerous times. You are a lucky girl!

Quilter Day-by-Day 06-24-2011 05:39 AM

Is that a White? The cabinet I've got with my White does that but my cabinet does'nt have wings. You have a beauty.

Yooper32 06-24-2011 05:40 AM

Oh, my word! That is just one magnificent find and you are just one lucky lady. Never seen a cabinet quite like that but sure would covet one.

Did you post this on the Vintage Sewing Machines Shop thread in Main category? There are several experts on these older machines on there, and one of them is sure to know about this cabinet.

twinkie 06-25-2011 02:51 AM

We can't tell what the brand of the machine is. I tried enlarging it but couldn't read it.

janiesews 06-25-2011 06:45 AM
