my favorite goofy "anti-spam" trick is when the person says something clever sounding like "put Viking in the reply so I know you are not a spammer" and then they have "Viking" in the title so any "reply" will put that in the title anyway....

I think that I might have replied that I am home 24/7/365 along with my trusty 45 and pit bull.
You can answer from another (temp.) email address so you aren't getting the BS back from them.

You can answer from another (temp.) email address so you aren't getting the BS back from them. I use my internet provider's email address. They can filter the spam for me. It hasn't actually been too bad, so their filters are good. Actually, they're overly aggressive and have a tenancy to filter the stuff I want too, which is why I don't use it for anything important. I used to answer from my archaic arcane address, but then I realised that the information you have to give to register a domain gave people "smart" enough to look it up the ability to show up at my house whenever they wanted. I nixxed that pretty quickly. |
I put "If you can see this ad, the item is still available", and I still get people that ask if it is still available.
I generally respond to the "still available?" emails if there is some substance to the email. The response I get the most of is some generic response with a bunch of nonsense, and a request to respond with my real email address so that they can discuss the item with me. Those are instantly trashed. |
|
That did it for me as well.!! I have the same look on my face that Maddie Madeline, my German Shepherd/Mastiff has when she encounters something just not quite right "WTF"!!!

A walking foot for a Kenmore machine: It's the description I love: "helps fabric feel more smoothly with materials such as, lawn, knit, vinyl, or leather" It'll help my lawn feel better? I need one of these! |
Tammi,
As silly as it may sound, "lawn" is a type of fabric. Google it. Cathy

LOL! Thanks Cathy! I had no idea. I've never come across that even in the older sewing books I have here.

Is this one really that rare? Honestly wondering. |

I don't believe any ad that says my mom gave me or granny left me -
my pink clone -- http://scranton.craigslist.org/art/4017411622.html No self respecting mom would have ever given her son a machine with a case as dirty as this one was!! Such a big fib, lol |
I've gotten some very good deals from guys who claim they got Mom's/Grandma's machine and have no desire to keep it. Though in all those cases, Mom or Grandma wasn't around to give it to them - seems no one else in the family wanted it, and they figured they could get a few bucks for it so they took it home.

Is this one really that rare? Honestly wondering. One of them sold on eBay last year for $50 or so. Unfortunately, people use a lot of hyperbole when listing items for sale. |

I got one...
http://dallas.craigslist.org/sdf/art/4048351867.html $100 "it needs Restoration" Really? Because it looks like you just brought it fresh from the bottom of the ocean. How do you deal with people like this? I had someone who wanted to sell a series 15, that wasn't sure if it worked for $300. |
eh.... that is not too bad. It is really mostly dirty.
If i was interested, I would offer them $40 If not (the case here) I would laugh and move on. |

Thanks Mark,
Yeah, I'm not going to deal with the item above. Here in the DFW area people tend to think that a 100 year old machine that hasn't been serviced, missing parts, and unknown working condition is worth big bucks. I found a CL singer ad, they had a vague description. I asked about the serial number and it ended up being a 1954 model 15. Looked ok in the picture. Description was as usual "unknown working condition" and they wanted $300. I can't even imagine how to negotiate something like this. |
Unless there was a penguin walking foot hiding out in the accessories, any offer I would tender for a $300 15- machine would likely offend the seller.

wow! For that price it better get up and make me breakfast :) |
Exactly, and same holds true for someone asking for $150.
I was just hoping someone had some experience trying to talk rationally to these people. |
ok, so here is a fun story for today...
This listing shows a "Victorian" Featherweight. http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/clt/4043593517.html I sent the following: "The Victorian Era ended in 1901 when Queen Victoria Died. This machine is exactly 40 years later than that. Just so you know" I got this back: If you research the machine...basically pull your head out of your a!! Then you find that is what they called this scroll plate style. It is called the Victorian Classic Model idiot. There are other models according to years of production. The add does not claim it is from the Victorian era! is English your first language? Get a f...... lIfe loser or at least make sure you know what the hell you are talking about before you spend your lonely loser hours looking for people to insult for no reason. Here, why don't you do some reading. http://singer-featherweight.class221...s/pristine-af/ " YIKES!!! so I had to reply to THAT!.... Wow, hostile much? perhaps a reduction in caffeine is in order.... Not sure why you felt the need to resort to "swearing". I AM a collector and restorer of sewing machines. I get that a website has referred to it as a "Victorian" design, but I have also seen sites refer to that as the "celtic" design, etc, etc. I would LOVE to see an advertisement where Singer used that designation.... The only model designations Singer used for Featherweights were; 221 - Class designation 221-1 221-K1 221-K4 221-K5 221-K7 221-J 221-J6 and in the industrial designation of this machine 221-G155 221-G156 and 222 for the free-arm version feel free to verify my data (or not) http://www.ismacs.net/singer_sewing_...s-200-299.html again, sorry your life is such that you feel the need to be rude when a person tries to offer advice.. have a great day and good luck with your sale. Steve which earned me THIS glorious rejoinder.... "Your the condescending ignoramus who emailed me to not subtly accuse me of being dishonest and give me a history lesson because I apparently don't know anything. You obviously get away with this passive aggressive attitude often, you even have yourself fooled about having the moral high ground. Since your reply had no hint of an apology, you could use something harsher than swearing. Get lost, you're a complete jerk and a waste of time." I am letting it go, but it would be fun to continue.... |
