After about four hours the rags are staying clean, I didn't think there could be that much gunk on a FW. I put it back together wind a bobbin works great. I start to sew and it seems to run about half speed. Anyway I was hot and tired so I will let the oil soak in and try later. Any one have any sugestions as to the speed? I checked the brushes they are fine. I will look at it again tonight if it is not too hot.

Gary you need to get a flashlight, take the bottom plate off, turn the machine upside down and really check in and all around the bobbin, hook/race, everything. Those FW's were made so small and precise that a hair, usually it is thread, can cause them to really slow down or quit sewing entirely! Ask me how I know!

The rest of the story: As I said it was hot as the sun set the sun kept shinning into the garage door. I kept moving back into the garage but ran out of shade. Well the hot sun was direct on me as well as the FW, being black the machine was hot to the touch and as said I was tired and I quit working. I latter thought that the heat might have expanded the machine causing the problem. I came home to night the garage was hot but the sun was not shinning on it. I pluged it in and it sewed perfectly. Another lesson learned. But my fingers are still sore.

If I didn't already own a great one of these 401A machines, I would go for this one.

Charlee... it is just a wee bit of a drive for you... (tryin' to enable as best I can). (:| who me??)

Linda, behave yourself!! William's already grumbling about driving two hours to go get that Mason tomorrow!!

That gives me hope! Looks like the same condition as the 66 Redeye I picked up yesterday for $15. I have been scared to post the "before" picture!

Oh please post it !! For $15, you can learn on it and if it doesn't come out perfect, you aren't out a ton of money. That was why I bought this machine, just to see how much of a difference there could be, and it had all its parts there.

Here is a picture of the aforementioned 66 Red Eye I picked up the other day. I was a bit disappointed when I saw it, as it was worse that the pics on Craiglist. But it will be fun and educational to do the best I can on it. It is missing a few parts (bobbin case, plate, upper thread spool) and many of the decals are silvered.

I bought a 301 a few weeks ago without a bobbin case not knowing what the bobbin case cost. I might not have bought it but it is a black long bed one I really wanted. I bid on several bobbin cases on EBay but they went for more than what I was willing to pay. Finally I bought a FW parts machine. Yet another lesson learned. I wish I was as smart as I was when I was a teenager LOL. I have been working on other FW's but want to get the 301 up and running. I have several machines to work on.

Now that I am retired, I have time to gallivant around the countryside. Tomorrow I have an appointment to pick up this Minnesota A for $10.

Could it ever be anything but a door stop? It has no motor, no treadle, no cabinet. Just its poor little self. No matter, it will be pretty once it is clean. This is the CL pic, I will post a bigger one tomorrow once I have it.

Looks like its in better shape than my door stop was when I started - yours looks like mostly dust, where mine was grime and rust!

Tommie, I wish you lived closer to me! I'd take that Pfaff treadle in a second! I have not even seen one in person yet!

Nancy

It is pretty neat, more like a commercial than regular type.

Take a look at this, it must have been buried somewhere.

I saw that. I'm about an hour away. Poor thing.

I saw it too and sent a text, also being an hour away. It was already sold. What was it exactly anyhow?
