Monica, are you sure you would want to place something sew gorgeous in a basement???

I don't have a basement, this is all if.

But you're correct about not putting that in basement. So, my basement has turned into a humongous sewing room!

It's a lovely piece to own...if....

That is indeed, kinda makes me wish I had my house back to place that beauty in it.

Charlee did you go to the White site under "Serial Numbers/Dating List" and see if your serial number is in there? I'd check that before calling White, just in case it is there, but be aware there are like 42 pages of serial numbers to go through!

Yep...and the only place that this serial falls is under VSII, 1928. This isn't a VSII tho...it's a Singer clone of the 27... I'm not entirely sure how much I trust that listing either, but I'm sure it's fairly close...when I called White, she had originally told me the 1928 date, but then backed up and said the Number 8 machines were "different"...I then got the date 1934. Who knows? ~grin and a shrug~ It's a machine...it's black...it's pretty...and it's got a shuttle... I'm ok with "about" when it comes to age!

The same site doesn't have a date for my AG Mason...and I've seen contradictory stories that AG Mason was indeed a separate manufacturer of machines until it sold out to White in 1916...

I think a lot of speculation goes into ANY research with the weight given to the preponderance of the evidence...

I need a vintage sofa for this room too. This one is perfect since it turns into a bed!

Never seen a vintage sofa like this.

Another CL that I emailed on. No, I don't NEED anymore machines - I thought I might just go look if they are still available...

Never seen a vintage sofa like this.

I've never seen one like that either, I thought sofa beds were a more modern thing.

Wish I still lived in central NY. That looks like a really good deal.

I've run in to a few good ones recently. Enough that when my DD saw the last machine she told her 4 month old DD that Grandma has issues. Of course the issues don't count when I sewing up stuff.

:) Thanks!

It really is far from perfect, but I'm really pleased with how it turned out!

Now...if I can keep myself from buying the Sphinx in the parlor cabinet that's on CL tonight...have to keep chanting, "No more cabinets! No more cabinets!"

OK, here's a few more dumb questions. I guess I'm filled with them lately about all of these lovely vintage Singers.
Is the Spartan the same size as the 99, but a 192 model instead?
About the godzila finish on an old Singer, is it the dull rough black on a machine? Are there certain years that the machines were made in that finish? I'm thinking that they were during WW2, is this correct? Other years too? Are those machines really rare and more desired machines?
I've seen one with a dull black finish recently but the serial number had been removed, so I don't know what it is, nor when it was made. The only things that date it are on the bobbin cover plate are a series of patent dates with the latest being 1910, and it had a 'Singer' plate bolted on the arm instead of the decals. The book, or what part of it was there showed a treadle machine, and the motor on the machine was labeled Universal. I think it was a treadle made into an electric machine.
