The face plate on the GE is too cute! It's a shame that all the paint is falling off. There is such a contrast on this machine. The GE logo looks so rugged and sturdy, while the ornate face plate look royal and sweet.

I wonder if any paint will stick to that without real good prep. I wonder what that machine is made of.

What's it made of? That's easy to determine. If magnet sticks it's iron or steel, if not aluminum

I'd bet on aluminum.

The machine is steel and the primer underneath looks like it is in good condition, no bare metal. So it would take some work to prep, but I cannot use it with the way it is now cause the paint is just chipping off. From the limited research I have found it was made by several manufacturers from 1929-1932. Mine is a GE as it has the patent number near the pillar. I have the worn case but the handle and inner tray are missing. Not sure if it had any attachments that came with it. I don't know what color I would choose to paint it, maybe an emerald green.

I have duty this weekend so will not be able to spend much time tracing down the electrical issue. Don't you just hate when something was working when you went to bed and the next morning it doesn't.

With the close up I really need to go ahead and take the tension apart and clean it also.

what do y'all know about Federation Treadles? I came across this one today at a yard sale. They don't have it out on display but she let me take some photos and I left my number in case nobody else buys it at her asking price, which is way too high, no matter what machine it is, but the teenagers were running the sale while mom and dad were at work, so she will have to call me back. It's a gorgeous machine, made in England, and the cabinet is in pretty decent shape. There's a few accessories but not many in it...were these made by White by any chance?

Monica, yes, it's a treadle base left from the late 1800's when the newspaper sold treadle machines on installment payments to subscribers. It's a really sturdy treadle...very heavy. Someone at some time cleaned it up and repainted it with flat black metal paint, and I really like it that way.

The MUT is coming right along. We actually got the New Glenwood into it, belted up (we used your aquarium tubing idea for a belt, and I like it!) oiled up, and running pretty well. Had to really soak her in oil, as she was screeching and screaming like a stuck cat when we first turned her!! LOL Poor old girl. But by this a.m. she was turning really quiet, and I was actually able to wind a bobbin on her. The Decorah Posten treadle is very heavy, but it treadles real smooth. We also oiled it all up last night. John will be putting up some more of the pics later today.

Thanks for the birthday wishes...it was on the 13th, and our anniversary is on the 14th, and John's birthday is July 13. So we have fun "combining" annibirthday presents!! :-)

The reason I was asking is because there is a white user manual and bill of sale in the drawer from 1884, however the serial number on the white receipt does not match this machine, nor does the manual, but I found it odd that they would be in this machine. I can't find any dating info to figure out the age of this one. She is pretty though. If you were going to make an offer on it, what would you say?

Jenn, it's a gorgeous machine. What is she asking? How much his it worth to you? As far as the White receipt, see my thread in Vintage Machines. We find all kinds of things that do not belong to the machine in the drawers.

Jon and Joe, the 301's plug was repaired by my local Janome guy who is repairing some other machines. He appreciated having Joe's diagram and Jon's directions to help him. I am extremely pleased. AnnieRose makes things that are difficult on other machines so easy. Thanks, guys.
